What do you intend to do with this rifle?  Hunt, paper?  Any features on the scope you would like?

SS 10x, or

SS 3-9 http://www.samplelist.com/SWFA-3-9x42-SS-Rifle-Scope-DEMO-B-P2780.aspx

will get most jobs done out to 1k.

some like the nikon buckmaster, but i've never looked thru one.

but i'd say it's not near the scope the SS is

I would second an ss 10 or 16 x get started buy good mounts and shoot a lot. More than servicable and rock solid.

My first choice would be the Super Sniper  3-9x42 with the new mil quad reticle and second choice would be the 6x42 Super Sniper but the  3-9 is much nicer glass more user frienly when adjusting the turrets as it uses one screw on to and has gear teeth inside as compared to three hex screws so easier to make fine adjustments.  Plus having the Mil based adjustments I find highly desirable on the  3-9  SS.
Any other scope that I could in good conscience point you toward would cost you more money.

I'd go with the above mentioned SS scopes & Talley rings.Next choice would be a Bushnell Elite 4200 & Tally rings!

Leupold 3X9-40 is excellant choice for a beginner. The price fits low end of your budget.
