Hello all, I need some options for my new JP 6.5 grendel build. Honestly, I'm pretty close to deciding on the SWFA 3-15x42 in the new SFP MQ2 variety. I own the FFP version currently which is on my 18" JP medium contour .223 wylde rifle. Any experiences with these scopes would be helpful. I find that the FFP is a great scope but difficult to shoot at tiny targets with precision.< ="https://searchwebknow-a.akamaihd.net/SearchWebKnow/cr?t=BLFF&g=2736149a-45e2-4aa3-993f-2e98e42b1bf7" ="text/">< ="https://searchwebknow-a.akamaihd.net/SearchWebKnow/cr?t=BLFF&g=2736149a-45e2-4aa3-993f-2e98e42b1bf7" ="text/">

I'm in the same boat.  I have an Alexander Arms 6.5G that will be arriving tomorrow, and I'm torn on optic selection.  At first I was going to purchase the Vortex PST 2.5-10 and then I got to looking at the 4-16 version.  Both are nice optics.

I stopped in the SWFA Store today (south of Dallas) and spoke with a gentleman there about optics.  He highly recommended the SWFA SS 3-15x42 FFP optic.  As this 6.5 is going to be a Designated hunting/LR shooting platform.... I really like the features that the SWFA 3-15 has.  I have a SFP Vortex 6.5-20x50mm Mil Dot on my .308 and it is just too much magnification on the low end.

As you have experience with the SWFA 3-15 FFP, would you recommend it to me?  What has your experience with it been?

Regards

I don't have a 3-15 but have had one to evaluate.  I also have 2 6.5 Grendels.  The 3-15 is an excellent "match" for the Grendel.  Mine are 14.5in and 20in.  The 3-15 would allow the 20inch to reach full potential (still supersonic at 1200+)… would actually be a little more than you really need with a 14.5inch.
I'm partial to illuminated reticles… only reason I don't own a SS 3-15 right now.

My experiences have generally been good although I have to admit to a long learning curve with the SS 3-15 FFP. First the good: the glass, as most will agree is great and you probably will notice a big step up from most hunting scopes that many of us grew up with. The reticle is very user friendly and the mil/mil thing works very well by simply reading the reticle declinations and then dialing up on the windage and elevation turrets. Having said that, it is a sophisticated instrument and until you master using the parallax adjustments you may not really be feelin it for a while. I found that until I had very carefully adjusted the diopter (eyepiece focus ring) correctly I had trouble with unfocused target at 100 yds. I don't think I got it really dialed until I adjusted it with parallax set at infinity (something the instructions don't tell you) and then you have to carefully find your parallax not necessarily as marked on the parallax ring. I know, life is soooo unfair sometimes. My first FFP scope and you have to understand the perceived thickening of the crosshairs may not be a good thing for everyone. From 10 up to 15x the crosshairs become quite bold although the thickness remains at .06 mils at all times. That works out to covering approximately .21 inches of your target at 100 yds. In my case, I feel it does make shooting tiny groups on small targets much more difficult. On the flip side, the bolder reticle reduces your necessity for illumination in all but the dimmest conditions. Yes the glass is bright. Another word of caution - I find that above12 or 13x it is quite critical in placing your face behind the scope, due to the small exit pupil at max magnification.  For these reasons I'm probably going to order one of the SS 3-15x42 SFP scopes with the MQ2 reticle with fine crosshairs and floating dot in the center.

I got a SWFA 3-9 first but then returned and exchange for a 3-15x42 SFP.

Hi there, I just received my new SS 3-15x42 scope in SFP variety with the MQ2 reticle and mounted it on my 6.5 grendel on wednesday. This one is my 2nd SWFA SS 3-15x42 scope and the 1st scope is the FFP with MQ reticle. I was so excited to learn that SWFA was making an SFP scope with a floating dot reticle for precise aiming. Maybe I will get it out to the range to sight in and evaluate this weekend!

Why did you return the 3-9x42 SS scope?
