I just purchased an Armalite AR50 and I'm looking for a scope in the $400 range for the time being. I plan on shooting 150 to 500 yards. Can you guys give me some info and advice on what power and brand to look at. I like the SWFA scopes. I'm looking at the SS 10x42.

The VX I's that I've seen have not been very good optically.  Not very clear or  bright.

I have a Leupold Rifleman (much like a VX-I) on an inline muzzleloader and it works just fine......on a muzzleloader.  However, I won't be taking any 500 yard shots either.
The Super Sniper is a great scope, and if those are your only two choices; go with that one.  However, there are a host of other scopes on the Sample List in the price range of the Super Sniper that are great scopes if you are, in fact, interested in a variable power scope.  The SS of course, is not.  If a fixed power will work for you then the SS 10x42 would be an excellent choice.

OK, I'm not set on adjustable and I plan on getting a better scope down the road. The SWFA SS 16X42 actually looks a little better choice for me. Since I'm only target shoting with it I see no real need for an adjustable. I'll think on it for a few more days and maybe get some more input from you guys.
Thanks

Good choice. Excellent

If your primary focus is target shooting, you'd be hard pressed to find a better scope/deal than this one:

10056 SWFA 16x42 SS Matte finish, mil dot reticle, 30mm tube, 1/4 moa target knobs, fast focus eye piece, rear parallax adjustment, like new condition. $800.00 $279.95

if you are punching paper @ 500yd. you will want something in the 16-24x range. its easer to hit when you can see clearly i e your bullet holes.

If you are on a budget, just get a Super Sniper 10x42.  You really do not need to have a whole lot of magnification to shoot out to 500 yards.  10x is plenty out to 1000 yards, unless your targets are very small.

As for seeing bullet holes at 500 yards, you need a very nice spotter and very good weather for that.
