I need some advice on which scope to purcahse for a Remington model 700 LSS in 7mm remington magnum.

I have looked at several brands, but based on my budget I have selected about 4 different scopes. They are the Simmons Whitetail expediton in 4-12 X 42 mm, Redfield Golden Five Star 4-12 X 40 mm, Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14 X 40 mm or

3-9 X 40 mm, and last is the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 X 40 mm.  I know the Redfield and the Simmons are much less expensive than the Weaver and the Nikon. I was mainly concerned about the recoil of the 7mm mag affecting the less expensive scopes. How does the quality of the Weaver and the Nikon compare to the other two scopes. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I haven't used one of Weaver's Grand Slam, but I did have a Weaver Classic V16 on a Custom Remington 700 300 WinMag that took the recoil like a champ.  The optics were clear and adjustments were always repeatable.  The Grand Slam series is supposedly higher quality than the Classics and have better glass from what I have read.  I have no doubt that they will take the recoil the same or maybe even better.  I have always been a firm believer in Weaver's optics.  You may also want to look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40.  SWFA sells them for 244.95.  My next scope may be the 3200 Elite 5-15x.

out of the ones you metioned i think the simmons white tail expidtion is the best scope for the money. you might aslo want to take a look at the burris FF2 3-9x40 with ballistic plex, which you get a free spotter with, and is optically awesome.

My standard answer for bargain shopping is once again the Burris Fullfield II and the Bushnell Elite 3200.

Amen to that ranburr.  I don't know nearly as much about scopes as a lot of people on this forum do, but my personal experience and everything I've learned form others point to Fullfielf II and Elite 3200 as "best for the money".  Simmons scopes are often comparable optically, but seems that build quaity is not as good as FF II and Elite 3200 for similar money.

I have to once again agree with ranburr on the Burris and the Elite 3200. I had the opportunity to see the guts of a Burris at a demo at the gun shop from a man that we solicited for what we called " Remington Day" last fall. The man, who was affiliated with Remington, Burris and several other companies brought in a cut-away version of a Burris scope where I believe his intention was to show the build quality of Burris scopes and I think it could be best summed up by what Chris stated in one of his responses about Burris scopes being over built in general. Everything appeared to be very rugged and I don't recall seeing much, if any, plastic parts in the cut-away Burris scope that was on display for all to inspect. A close friend of mine has a 3-9x40 on an older 280 Ruger M77 and he is not the kind of guy that handles his guns with tender loving care. This scope has performed for him without a single hitch for many years and has maintained it's zero regardless of his mistreatment of this rare Ruger( it shoots sub 1" groups @ 100ydrs with factory Federal 150 gr. Nosler Partitions). He is a good friend, but, I wouldn't lend him one of my rifles without posting a bond prior to a hunt. The scope in question is a FullField with several small dents and it's never been on a sheep hunt if you know what I mean. Good optics and rugged design best sum up this particular Burris.

With regards to the Weaver scopes, I had a V16 on a 30 STW and it handled it's recoil without a hitch. Optically it was OK, I could conclude from what I have heard and read that the Grand Slam would probably serve you well also ( much better optics and the Micro trac system). Of course, as always I would be remiss to not mention the Elites from Bushnell. The Simmons would be my last choice.

The Burris FF 3-9X40 is a excellent scope ffor your 7 MM. I have it on my 270 WSM and like it a lot. For the price you can't beat it. Get it in the ballistic plex. I will be sending for another one for my other rifle.

I don't have any experience with the FF2, but I have a FF1 and have used a 3200 and a Weaver GS.  The FF1 and the 3200 were about the same in light transmission, although the 3200 had a very narrow field of view.  Both of these scopes were just a tad under my Vari-X-III's in light transmission.  The Weaver Grand Slam was BETTER than my Vari-X-III's.  There is absolutely ZERO doubt in my mind that the GS is better than the 3200 and the FF1 at near dark.
