Looking for a scope for a .338 Win Mag to be used for elk and possibly someday bear. I limit myself to 300 yards for shots on live game.
I want 2.5x or lower on the low end and 7x or higher on the top end and an illuminated reticle. The illuminated reticle is a definite "must have". I'm currently considering the Leupold VX-R 2-7X33 with German #4 reticle. It seems to fill the bill and can be had for $500 or less. What has been other's experience with this scope? What other scopes in the $600 or less street price range and fitting my requirements might be a better choice? |

I posted a comparison of that scope vs a VX3 on here a while back. Short of it was that if you have any astigmatism try it from somewhere you can return it. Really sweet scope otherwise and most people don't seem to have the issue I did with the illumination.

Agreed on the astigmatism, it will be a deal killer for the VX-R most likely. If you have it, you'll likely see immediately when you bring the scope up.
Your power range is reasonable for what you have listed as limits. You could consider a 1-6 power as well, the 6x will get you to 300 yards with ease. That would open up other options in the SWFA line, and in Leupold as well.

A 1-6 would be fine. But, I would look for at least a 32mm objective to boost low light performance.

This would be my choice (edit: for the criteria and "must haves" you list):
