How is everyone, im new to this site and pretty new to shooting. i have learned a lot from this site and need some help choosing a scope, i just treated myself to a Remington 700 LTR (.308), most of my shooting will be target shooting at 30yds-300yds. after reading everyones posts i decided to order a ss10x42 and a leupold mark 4 base and medium rings, unfortunately everything i ordered is out of stock and they werent able to tell me when it would be available.

So my first question is if i keep this as my order, are the 0 moa base and medium rings an appropriate choice for that setup?

My second question is if i wanted to get a scope on the gun earlier is the bushnell elite 4200 6-24x50 a good alternative?

I am aware that it is a variable and cost twice as much, but is it a good scope for a beginner? I figured since im learning a fixed would be better for me, but i have had the gun over a month now and im itchin to take it to the range. Or, if anyone can recommend an alternative scope in the 300-600 dollar range, however the more i save now the better, for range time and rounds, and when i get better ill start lookin in the 1000 dollar range. So if anyone can help me make up my mind, either telling me other scopes to look at or telling me to wait for the super sniper ( and how long ill probably have to wait from your own experience) it would be much appreciated, you all seem to be very knowledgeable about this sport and id like to thank you for your advice.

Keep the Super Sniper

Go to TPS and order their low rings and 20 moa base.

You don't want the high power scope.  You never need more than 10 or 12X.

If you decide to sell the SS later, it has great resale value.  Go to ar15.com and look at

Equipment Exchange.  You will probably find a SS 10X on most days.

Here is mine with same setup.

And results

Trust me.  Military snipers use 10X for longer shots.

If you really want to be impressed go for the IOR 6X fixed or 10X fixed.  Unbelievable resolution and clarity.

I would put up my IOR 6X fixed tactical against the SS 10X and probably hit any man sized target out to 1000 meters.

And I wear glasses.

The fixed is sturdier as there are fewer moving parts/lenses.  They are less expensive than variables for the same reason.  So you can get great quality for less than variables.  Unless you are shooting at 25 yards or less, the fixed will work.

And the SS 10X is the best value out there.  Note:  Do not get the SS 16 or 20.  They are too powerful and not as clear or easy to use.  You only need 10X.

Next to that, the IOR is probably the next best value as the IOR is one of the best optics out there.  More cost, tho.

thanks for the info, i originally tried to order the tps setup but they were out of stock also on the steel and i didnt know if the 7075 aluminum alloy was a good alternative. plus when i tried to order the rings, my computer stopped the transaction saying that the secure sign certificate was not valid or expired and advised me not to put my credit card # on the website. as for shots goin past 300 yds, i live in a dense suburban area the longest range is either 200 or 300 yds although id love to try my luck at a 600 yd shot. nice rig by the way, i went to the shop looking to get a savage 10fp hs stock but they said they couldnt get it for a while so i went with the ltr and kicked my self for a week for not gettin the pss but ive read you cant notice a difference between the two for shots under 600 yds.

also what is the advantage if any of having an illuminated reticle? is it the same advantage as having a 1st focal plane reticle?

I almost bought the LTR, but I already had a 20 incher....FN PBR.  Real nice.

Also, I am a wimp.  The FN weighs 10 pounds and the LTR is about 7.

I have the LTR with a 20x42 fixed SS, and EOD is right, it is not as clear as my NFX however with that said,  i still get a clean clear field of view at 250yds out..... But when i shoot 250 in.. its has a little more noise.. but still well worth what I got into it.  I'm no xpert but when i shoot a good tight group at 250 yds then that makes me happy.
A tight group for me.. is 3 - 4" (Dont laugh..I was in the NAVY an was an HM)
Happy Hunting!!!
