Sightron 3-9x42, Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40, Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 are some of your best bets and all under $300 and all with excellent warrantees.  Of course there are others but those three stand out.......Doug

you could go this route, but it will cost a lot more, 40mm to 50mm isnt going to make a huge difference, the 4200 does fine around dark as it is

I like a 50 mm scope objective and a 30mm tube this should be awesome, I just thought you wanted to spend less money.  If you can afford more look at sample list at the used Kahles scopes they are eaven better  but they arent cheap.  This one is a better value than the one Pyro listed as far as I can see.

I'm partial to the Bushnell and Nikon scopes, sub thousand dollars they are hard to beat.
I've read where there is concern about the Nikon CS, but then again, you will likely never need to use it. SWFA uses Bushnell to cover warranty work on their Super Sniper, that tells me volumes about Bushnell.

I have seen a few Leupold vari-xIII 2.5-8 for sale used for just over $300. 24hourcampfire had one or 2 listed lately. I would look for a like new used one.

I have had to use Bushnell customer service twice, and My scopes were repaired and back to me within 3 weeks.  No phone calls no nothing, I just sent it in with and they updated me with a mailing of when they received it and then I got it back a couple weeks later.
I think there are a lot of manufacturers that will take as good a care of you as Leupold, Bushnell is one of them.   And why would anyone want to buy a used Leupold when you can get a new Bushnell 4200 for $249 which has much better class than a vari-xIII and is just an all around better scope.

For under $300 I would go with the Bushnell 3x-9x-40 4200.  At just a little over $300 you could also look at the Weaver 3x-10x-40 Grand Slam.

Price, glass quality, durability is equal, CS is just as good.  So why pay more for a lesser overall scope.  Leupold has nothing on hardly anyone, people just need to pull their head out of the sand and check out some of these other brands.

The one thing I give high regards to is the reticle options, but other than that I just don't see the point in paying extra for a inferior product.

The 3-9x40 4200 has better contrast and resolution the the Leupold, IMO. It is not by a lot and when looking at the VX-III, 4200 and Monarch comparisons the differences are not a much. Still, I like being able to see the small branches in the thick stuff when I am far out from it. These obstacles can make for a missed shot or worse, a wounded animal.
I can say that the 3-9 Monarch and 4200 let me see better in lower light than the Leupold.
I think all three of these scopes are fine hunting scopes. The Leo costs a bit more, though.

I have a Vari X III, it's a damned good scope, although for the money the Bushnell, and Nikon are better values.

Try a Sightron SII 3x9 42mm at 199.95 at SWFA.  It is as good of a scope as any mentioned.  Made in Japan to strict tolerances.  The company is based out of NC, about 40 minutes from me.  I own a different model, but it is without a doubt in the same league as any of the scopes mentioned.

No, I can't direct you to a 20 page report from some scientists in some optics laboratory in the Swiss Alps or anything.

These are things that get "noticed" by people who hold them up side by side and peer through them when it gets dark to see which one is brighter.  Or which one looks clearer when you're looking for bullet holes in a target.  Lots of these folks here who own a lot of these scopes have certainly noticed differences between specific brands and models.

If you have looked through the 4200 side by side with the VX-III, then you can tell us what you think.  And we won't require you to have your report notarized or anything.  We'll take your word for it.   Smile

Its generally agreed among the optics masters here that the glass on the 4200 is superior quality - better than the VX III. I happen to be very pro leupold and have several of their expensive optics but I also have a 4-16x40 Bushnell 4200 that is an absolutely awesome scope to look through bright sharp high quality glass and a bargain price wise. One of the generally accepted BEST Buy  scopes it the Bushnell 4200 3-9x40

Great scope extremely reasonable price.  Now where Leupold takes the cake is with their huge variety of different scopes and different reticles and the custom shop which can alter many scopes by adding target knobs or other special features that appeal to individual tastes. The Leupold scopes are tried and proven, the customer service is excellent, the quality is good, and you often find that they have more internal adjustment than other brands.

OK you posted the first one you came across and I posted one that I have been considering buying, it's about ten dollars less and has an illuminated reticle in a 4a which I like.  This does appear to me to be a better value - its not personal - Im just suggesting a different model --- one that I would like to have.

I have both scopes in question, and the 4200 is better, the fact that I love my Leupold, just makes the argument for the 4200 even more valid.
Several of us own many different types of scopes, we all look for different things in our own list of what's important, and try to be objective in our findings. We are here to share openly those observations, you can take it or you can leave it, it makes no difference to us what so ever. All we ask for here is an honest, objective debate, so that others can make up their minds without wasting time and more importantly their money.

I can tell you compared to IOR, Zeiss, Kahles, AETEC (OLD MODEL) 4200, Millett TRS, Nikon Monarch, and the list goes on as I have immediate access to any of these for comparison, as do several others here.

S&B is out of my budget, they are nice though. Trijicon will be a purchase soon enough though. I gotta Ruger 300wm just itching for some better glass.
