    Posted: January/02/2013 at 09:17
I just bought a Rem 700 SPS Varmint with the 26" heavy contour barrel and I need some optics advice.   One important note is I shoot lefty because my left eye is dominant I did get a right handed gun thou. I have what I think Is a funny problem I have long legs and short arms and while shooting a friends .270 rem 700 I felt like I was stretching my neck for all I was worth.. lol. Any how my budget is is 400- 500 and I have always liked Nikon Optics but I am hearing some rumblings that they are not as good as  they used to be (is anything?). i am going to shoot target at 100 yds +  meaning at my house 100 yds is as far as I can shoot.  Would like side focus and a normal recticle I was looking at a monarch SF 6x18 by 44  I think. The caliber is .308 and I would like to be able to shoot to 200 to 300 yds + at the range. Thanks in advance!

Ok  you mentioned a 6-18 power scope but I think you will be much happier with a lower power on the bottom end even if it means giving up a little on the top end.  The Zeiss mentioned above is a great scope but has a balistic reticle.  I will post a couple that use the more traditional duplex type since you asked for a "normal reticle". ( a term that may be a bit vague ).   Any way let me tell you about these the Bushnell should have good glass but the zeiss the best glass the leupold VX2 not quite as good as the other two but the Leupold has the CDS custom dial system so you can dial in correction on the elevation knob to adjust it for longer distances.  Leupold will custom engrave a knob to your caliber and bullet choice for that scope then it is as simple as using  1 for 100 yds  2 for 200 yds 3 for 300 yds etc but you may have to hold into the wind a tad on a windy day at longer distances. I would mount it with talley lightweight ringmounts or with warne base and rings.

Im not worried  about a little over budget but that is a $800.00+ scope the model you linked is a demo model.

I know that its not fair to rank brands because not all models are made the same but what about a list of brands ranked good better best?

here is what I was thinking about..
also could you link me to a site that goes into technical detail about scope specs, I get Objective Diameter
bigger = more light let in, but what is the importance of Exit Pupil?

Any how thanks so much for the advice!

Also I all ready ordered a Leupold std 1 piece base and thought I would order rings when I picked the scope. I liked the Piccatany rail and rings but they where 250 dollars with no scope.

its all related. problem is that your power range is pretty high and the objective diameter isnt very big. 44/20=2.2. your eyes could use more than that....

The Conquest listed above is a better scope all the way around than the Nikon. The Zeiss Warranty an CS is far and above the Hit and Miss attempts at a warranty by Nikon. When you get to real life shooting You will see better with the Zeiss 14X than you will with the 20X Nikon. Quality glass trumps magnification every time. The Zeiss reticle is etched ans it will show up better especially at lower light conditions. You should check out the Burris Signature select rings if you plan to use the Leupold base. Secure wider grip, and almost no chance of damaging the scope.

This gives good explanation of rifle scope terms. I posted link to the conquest on sample list because your mentioned price range. These scopes will be pretty much brand new and have full warranty.

Well I got to visit a store that shall remain nameless and I compared the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 to a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 and  the Zeiss was crystal clear and sharp as a tack. While the Nikon image was brighter and still very sharp.  The Bottom Line is my budget does not permit a $700.00 + Scope

If I am shooting around the house at 100 yds and at the range 200 yds and further what power do I need? My eyes are not very good and  i would like to be able to see the hole in the paper through the scope.

Side Focus is still a Must have. So what magnification do you recommend 4-16, 5-20 or 6-24?
6-24 probably out of the budget. Also I like the 50 mm objective vs the 44 mm

I Put the scope on the back burner for a bit, but now I am ready to buy. I think I will only shoot 100 yards max at the house but I found out the local range has a one thousand yard range. I think it would be fun to try to see how accurate I could get at 1000 yards but it is not a priority. I still feel like I must have side focus and I would like a bit longer eye relief although once I have the scope I might get a different stock, cutting the polymer one may not be fun or possible.

An SS10x side focus would work for you.  That is more than enough at 100X and will work out to 1,000.  Be advised, 1000 yard shots are far less about that the rifle can do and far more about what you can do, especially when starting out.

You DO NOT need a 6-24X scope, and I would recommend against one in that mag range.

The !0X SS will do everything you need, and do so within your budget.
