I'm looking to buy a low light scope for hunting over mostly open field food plots, most shots will be 300 - 500 yards. I am looking at the elite 4200 4-16x40 or 4-16x50 in the bushnell line or the nikon monarch 5.5-16.5x44. Any opinions between these scopes ? I have heard the monarch is brighter in low light. I will probabily need all the magnification I can still use under these condions, how much more magnification can I use with the 50mm. Thanks Guys.

Well hopefully someone with more experience in optics than I will chime in, I have only looked through the Monarch no real world experience with it.  My general impression was that it is a very good scope.  I do have a Bushnell 4200 and I think it is one of the best buys out there.   I was very impressed with its low light ( dusk dawn) capabilities.  When I compared it to my Zeiss Conquest it was very close.  The Zeiss was slightly brighter at a time where it was well past hunting hours so the 4200 was more than adequate in lower light situations.

Of the ones you mentioned I think all will be great scopes, so it would be a personal preference.  My personal preference is that I dont really like 50mm objectives on hunting scopes, just feels too big to me.and I have never seen that much of an advantage to warrent lugging around the larger size.  Again personal preference.  Out of the ones you got posted I really like the 4200 4-16x40.  I think it is a versital magnification range.  Both will go at or above 16X but I like the fact that the Bushnell goes down to 4X.  Just one of those things to consider if a shorter distance shot presents itself.  I am not sure if Bushnell offers the FireFly for that magnification but if so I think its worth the extra money. If you use a brighter flashlight to charge the cross hairs they glow bright and for a pretty long period of time so those diffilcult low light shots at the begining of end of the day get a bit easier since you can really pick up your cross hairs.

Again both are really good scopes, I dont think you can go wrong either way.

For low light it is pretty important to have some sort of quality reticle illumination.  Optically, I would give a slight edge to Elite 4200, but they are very close.  However, I found that even when I can still see through the scope the reticle is hard to distinguish against dark background.  I'd seriously consider Firefly reticle.

The FireFly reticle is not available in the 4200 4-16 yet. It comes in the 1.5-6x36, 2.5-10x40 and the 2.5-10x50 in the 4200 line. Like Acenturian and many others, I too am not a big fan of 50mm objective scopes.

I always try to support the store here, their staff is great and very easy to deal with.  Although the prices you listed are very low so that sounds like an awsome deal.

Sounds to good to be true. Are they current prices for fresh product? They recently improved the Rainguard coatings for durability and performance.
