Hello guys Im a new member and an avid shooter. I just recently aquired a DPMS SASS 308 with the fluted barrel. Im all confused on optics I bought a new Leupold MK4 4.5-14x50 Mildot recently but it had some cosmetic damage so I sent it back. I liked the scope and it was made very well but after looking through a Zeiss Conquest in the same
configuration with Target knobs. I belive the clarity of the Zeiss is better after comparing the two. My question is how are the Zeiss scopes compared to the MK4 all the way around. I prefer an illuminated scope but Im open to new ideas. What other scopes are on par with these without breaking the bank. Your opinions are appreciated. PS I shoot 500 yards weekly but want to go further out.

Thanks,

I would take a look at IOR.  They make amazing tactical scope and have the same glass in them as Zeiss.  Both us Schott glass.  I have several IOR scopes and they are top notch scopes.  They blow away the Leupold MK4 in my opinion.  http://www.swfa.com/pc-10182-292-ior-4-14x50-tactical-30mm-rifle-scope.aspx

Zeiss is the better scope by far as far as the scope goes, but the CS at leup. may be faster with less hassles. I have 2 leup 4.5X15 and 2 modern Zeiss. There is a speed limit sign out my front door 1,123 yds. It is at a steep angle. I can read it with both of the Zeiss but it is blurred in both the leups. my Burris ff ll is between the two. Fuzzy but  can still distinguish the letters.

you need to decide if you want a target scope or a tactical. neither of the zeiss are "tactical" and the conquest will need at least a 20moa rail, probably the diavari also.

I agree the glass in the Zeiss is better than Leupold, but I have ran into a problem trying to use the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 X44 on a 308 with 20moa base.  It doesn't have enough internal adjustment (down) to allow me to zero at 100 yards with my rifle (Kimber 8400 Tactical).  The Zeiss only has 43 MOA elevation adjustment.  This is fine if you only want to shoot mid-range.  Hope this helps.

Zeiss has better glass, but Leupy is tougher and has more adjustment.

In no way is leupold more tougher than a ZEISS !!!!!   And it seems from many complaints on the web leupold has been shipping  alot of blemished and imperfect scopes !  Does that tell you anything about quality control ???   Whacko

Pardon me Merc, but I beg to differ. The 30mm tube and steel turrets on the Leupy Mk4 make it a tougher scope than the 1" tube and plastic turrets of the Zeiss Conquest.

I could have either but the tactical scopes I have are Leupold Mark 4 scopes. I will probably buy an IOR for the next tactical scope I get but the Leupold scopes are battle tested and proven to be quite durable. The majority of tactical scopes in law enforcement are Leupold. The majority of scopes the U.S. Army uses are Leupold. USMC uses Schmitt Bender but they cost three times as much. You do not need the same quality of glass in a rifle scope that you need in a camera lens on an orbiting satelite to be able to kill something at 500 yds. I shoot open sights at 600 with an M1a often enough to know you can make lethal hits at that distance with no optics. What is important in a tactical scope is that the internal adjustments are reliable and are the same every time and that you have enough internal adjustment to get to the distance you are trying to shoot. Leupold 4.5--14  30mm tube scopes have 100moa of internal adjustment that is a lot more than you will find on Zeiss hunting scopes. Hunters seldom shoot over 300 yds but have a great need to use the scope in lower light so exit eye pupil is important.  I have a DPMS .308 and it has a 10x Super Sniper on it and for a ..................$299. scope it is great and all that the gun could possibly need, and no its not zeiss glass but it works.

I'm with Supertool here, Look at an IOR. Tough and very good glass, Illuminatede reticle, and a fantastic reticle as well.
