I think my spelling is off but anyway.
I need a new pair of bins. Ran across this site about 1.5-2 years ago and bought a pair of Promaster 8x42 the best at the time about 425 dollars. I must say they are bright and clear. But they have metal shavings in the barel, and now the eye piece extension just came off. I tried to screw it back on but the screws are stripped. I glued it back on so I can use them. But they are a basket case now.

I photo birds and don't use bins alot. But really liked the view threw the Promaster. Is the quality of the Hawlke or ZenRay better than Promaster? I am not really very smart on bin for sure. I don't want to spend over 4-500 hundred bucks. but would like a pair that will hold up say 5 years or so.

www.flickr.com/photos/avianphotos  if you are into birds here is my link.

Thanks, Gary

The view is gonna pretty much be the same with Hawke, Zen-Ray ED and Promaster. Zen-Ray has made some upgrades in their ED2 & ED3 line. I think Zen-Ray's customer service is also better as well. The new Vortex Talon HD is basically the same as the ED2 and they have great warranty and customer service. If you liked the bino, I'd recommend the Vortex Talon HD or Zen-Ray ED3. More than likely, they'll be a better view than what you had, and probably have better quality control. Also, those two have good warranties in the event that you have similar or worse happen to your new binos.

There are other very good offerings from Leupold and Nikon in that price range that will offer quality binos and good warranties. However, the view will probably not be quite as good as the above mentioned optics.

Ah, also the Minox BV II and Minox BL comfort bridge binos may be other options to look at.

Thanks guys. I really liked the view threw the Promasters. I may give the Zens a try. Also there is a Minox dealer in Bangkok. So I may look at them. Didn't think about that.

I tend to agree with Motts's comments.

I am surprised you didn't send the Promasters in for repair/replacement. They had a pretty good warranty from what I remember. I sent one in once and they shipped me out a new pair.

Definitely give the Zen Ray or Eagle Optics/Vortex models a try. There have been improvements to the series since the Promasters came out. Better AR coatings, a change from silver to dielectric prism coating, a faster focusing speed and a more refined eyecup design.

Having said that, and if price is a concern, then consider some of the demo models on Zen Ray's website. Last I checked they had some great prices on several of the ED2 models and I am sure they would ship overseas.
