I am in need of a new scope for my Savage .17 HMR. Optical quality, while important may not be of TOP priority, as this will always be shot in daylight hours. The real important feature is tracking. I currently have on it a BSA Sweet 17, this is the biggest piece of $#!% I have ever owned. Yesterday my groups were high and to the right. I turned the turrets four clicks down and four clicks left. I then started hitting 2" low and 2.5" left. My calibrated turret on the BSA does me no good on a scope that doesn't track. I was looking at a Swift Premier on the samplelist, but don't know how they track. I need a 4.5-14 or 6-18x with adjustable objective, and target turrets. Kenton must also make turrets for them. I would like to do this for around $250-300. That will limit me greatly. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about the turrets but take a look at the Weaver V16. Darn good scope.

are you wanting a target type scope or just something that will stay centered once you zero it in?

Am kind of looking for a scope that I can use on paper and for small rodents from 100-300 yards. This was kind of the reason for needing target turrets and a Kenton BDC knob. A scope that doesn't track well won't do me much good if I crank it from 100 yards to 300 yards. I considered the Super Sniper, but would like a lower power for the closer shots and the higher power for the longer ones. I have a place where I can shoot prairie dogs and gophers out much further than the .17 will reach, but would like to keep the big gun quiet till I get the close ones.

As a general rule, avoid BSA scopes.

What's your budget?

For thta setup, I'd go with something like a Bushnell 4200 3-9 or 3200 if the budget is smaller.

Budget would be about 300, The Swift Premier would be ideal, if they track pretty well, otherwise might end up with a 4200. Would like to have a little more power, but the clarity might well be worth it. I assume the 4200 tracks pretty good. Would love to have a Conquest 4.5-14, but wouldn't we all.

People must have some amazing eyes to be taking small rodents at 300yds with a 3-9x scope. Kenton makes BDC turrets for both the Weaver V16 and V24. I'd think a V24 with a varmint-plex reticle would be perfect. But then again I just use mine for targets so I'm not moving the turrets much.

Good point, although I can see a mouse at 100 feet so if I can do my job and put the bullet where the cross hairs are pointing that should be doable. No matter though, shooting a mouse at 300 yards, seeing him is the easy part.

Varmint Al has one of the best reports on the .17 HMR I've ever seen. http://www.varmintal.com/17hmr.htm The Weaver V16 looks like a good choice for really small targets. I sure don't like the trajectory @ 300 yards, though.

Oh forgot to add, I like the 4.5-14x Buckmaster with side focus.

Mil Dot or Nikoplex.

Not quite that small. I was thinking gophers and ground squirrels out to 150 or so, and Prairie dogs out to 300 max. When my scope was kind of working, on a calm day I could hit 1/2 gallon milk cartons at 300 yds. pretty easily. although not a lot of punch at that range.

This would be my choice hands down, I have one on my short mag, and love it, but things are just too tight right now.
