Hi,

I recently bought what appears to be a "new" Anschutz-Savage Model 54, 22LR, 1972. I would like to put a Leupold scope on it, but really do not know what power I need. I have been told that with a 22LR, the maximum range is around 60 yds, so I guess that is what I'm looking for. Would the 4 power be better than the 3 at this range? Guess I'm looking at either the VX-2, or VX-1.

Thanks.

A better way of putting it is that most shots with a 22LR are taken within 60 yards. You can shoot a 22LR much farther than 60 yards but what is the purpose for the rifle?

If your plan is for recreational rifle for rabbit, plinking and target practice then your 4 power approach is perfect. Either the VX I or II would serve great.

Happy shooting...

A 2-7 would be a good versatile power for a .22. If you are stuck on a fixed power the 4x should be sufficient. Also look at some of the Weaver Classic Rimfire's. Optics are just as good as the the Vx-I and Vx-II with a cheaper price. You can easily shoot more than 60 yards.

Mostly I will be plinking/target shooting with myn 13 y/o daughter.

I am not stuck on a fixed power by any means, and in fact was wondering if one of thier variable power 3x9--40 or (50)  might be the answer, but I'm not clear on what all the numbers mean. On a 3x9-40 (or 50) do they mean that it can be adjusted from the lowest magnification of 3 up to a maximum  of  9? Also, what would be the advantage of the 40mm or 50mm for this type of shooting?

If I went with the 2-7 mentioned, would that be sufficent for 100yds or less?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The 3x9 speaks to the variable magnification range of the scope. (3 Power to 9 Power)

The 40 or 50 is the Objective Size of the lens mm's in front of the scope. (40mm or 50mm Lens) The bigger the objective size & lens the bigger the area to focus the light. Everything being equal: More light equals a brighter scope at dusk and dawn. For your application and teaching your daughter to shoot I wouldn't get all worried about large objectives and the 40mm would work fine.

At 6 years old I started on a 10/22 with a fixed 4 power scope. That 10/22 was a great rifle and I shot it well out to 100 yards no sweat. The 2-7 Weaver Scope would also be an excellent scope on your 22LR for shooting out to 100 yards.
