Hello everyone I'm new to this forum and I was wondering if anyone can help me decide on a pair of scopes for 2 rifles , one being an AR15 with a 16" barrel and the other being a Beretta ARX 100. I want to buy 2 of the same kind so there's isn't a difference in training. I can't decide on either a Leatherwood CMR4 or a SWFA SS 1-4. Both scopes look really good and are packed with really good reticles and features for a great price. My questions are which one is more durable? and which one has the best reticle for close to medium ranges? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can you define close and medium range?
I have no time behind the Leatherwood, lots of time behind the SS1-4.

Are you dead set on one/both of those 2?

The ranges I'm talking about are close quarters to 600 yards. I'm not necessarily dead set on these 2 scopes but they seem to be the best buys for the money.

I've been using a CMR 1-4x for about four years and have been very pleased with the optical quality, durability, engineering and functionality.  It has been on everything from .22 LR to .45-70 with no problems. The ones on The Sample List are real bargains which is where I bought mine.  Great performance for the price.  I have not seen or used either of the the SWFA 1-4x scopes but have two other SWFA models with which I am also very happy.  Tough decision.  Vortex is also making a new 1-6x in the same price range that might be worth checking out also.

I have a friend that has the new Vortex Strike Eagle and I'm not that impressed with it. The glass is clear but the reticle is small and it makes the bdc lines run together for me at least. I'm leaning towards the CMR4 just because I think the reticle is more user friendly and with what you said about yours being on a 45-70 and it still works is pretty cool. Big Smile

I probably would not set them up with identical scopes.  On one I would use either an Aimpoint Comp M4s or preferably a Trijicon compact 2X the other ---- at least a 3-9x42 SS or something with some magnification because a 1-4 may be OK for moderate distances but its going to be entirely undesireable past 200 yds. If I were to set up both same same I would go SS 3-9x42 rather than the 1-4 because of how I would tend to use it... mostly on known distance ranges with paper targets. If you have a true tactical need then the Aimpoint or the ACOG is the best route. Having said that I am not against a 1-4 scope and the SS is a better than average choice and would be good but I would really like more power out past 200 yds
