I am putting one of these scopes on my gun in the next month. I plan on putting it on my Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight 26" barrell chambered in 270 wby mag. I am going between the new Leupold VX3 3.5-10x50, Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x50, Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x50, and the Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x50. It will be used mainly for whitetail hunting but, I am also into predator hunting. I was thinking of maybe a possible illuminated reticle or any opinions on any other reticles. I want the best light gathering possible for low light situations since it will be used about 40% of the time for predator hunting. Any inputs I haven't heard to much on the new VX3's. Also reccomendations on mounts?

Help Please...

I think any and all the scopes you listed would be a great addition to the Mark V, I like the Vx3 and the Conquest, but this is just my personal opinion.

Zeiss recommends no Conquest on magnums - the regulars knew it would come eventually.

Many have mounted Conquest on magnums, I have too; but Zeiss says the erector assembly might not handle the recoil.  I've also seen a Conquest die due to recoil.

I'd recommend the 42 or Conquest (with the understanding the Conquest might die at the worst possible time.)  And I too would highly recommend Talley rings.

What is the maximum range you expect shots during low light? This would be my choice:
Sightron SII Big Sky 3-12x42 Mil-dot

Use the Talleys for mounts.  Why put such a heavy scope on an ultralight rifle?  All those 50mm scopes are going to be heavy.  I'd drop back down to a 40mm or 42mm.  The same scopes you're looking at all come in models with smaller objectives.  Just MHO.

As far as recoil and the Conquest go................would a .30-06 fall into the same category ? Where would the cut off be as far a recoil ?

I called Zeiss to ask about mounting a Conquest on a 7-pound 300WM and they said, "Don't do it, 30mm tube or greater."  I had already done it and hadn't had a problem with it.

I made the call after shooting with a guy at the range when he broke his Conquest on a barrett .50cal.

They said not to mount on "magnum rifles."  obiously, a 6.5-pound .270 generates more recoil than a 15-pound 300WSM so I cannot say where the line is drawn, I'm just passing along what Zeiss told me.

I have since sold that rifle and scope and gone to a Diavari - and been very pleased.

As I said, I owned a 300WM with Conquest and it was my "go-to" gun for several years, took many hogs, a few deer, and various other critters - and never had a hiccup.  It is a viable option, just be advised Zeiss recommends against it.

Interesting! My call to them was awhile back, and I didn't get the name of the person with whom I spoke.  Email Swaro and see what they say.  They also told me no 1" tubes on heavy-recoil guns.

it only took chester an hour to email me back i was actually expecting to not hear back from them until tomorrow. their message on the web site sure sounds like an open invitation to abuse the conquest line of scopes. if they dont recommend mounting them on magnums they need to rewrite there opening statement about the conquest.

I have the Bushnell Elite 4200 2-10x50 IL scope and has worked very well.My Sightron Big Sky is now my favorite scope for my hunting needs. It's brighter than any of my Nikon Monarchs or Leupold VXIII.If you need the illuminated reticle the Bushnell is a good choice. The raingaurd is also a plus.

I just bolted a Conquest to a 300 Wby. topping the scales at 7.5 pounds scope, and rings included. So far haven't had any problems, but haven't put a lot of rounds through it yet. The scope has seen over 1500 rounds on a wsm already. I'm hoping it'll see that many more on this rifle.

I have been using the 3,5-10x50 Conquest for a couple of seasons on my Kimber Montana in 308 Win.  I do a lot of low light hunting, and the Conquest is an ok dusk and dawn scope.

No recoil to mention on the 308, so I don´t know how it will hold up on a rifle that kicks a bit....
It sounds a bit strange though that an otherwise great scope should have recoil restrictions?

I´m also a big fan of the #4 reticle and have it on all my scopes (even on a old Vari X III 2,5.8x36 Big Smile
The #4 is the best of both worlds Excellent
