I just purchased a rifle and it came with a scope I have never seen before.  It is marked L & S Inc Ultra 10X-M3.  As you can guess, it is a fixed 10x scope, 30mm tube, adjustible target turrests, side focus.  The top turret says 7.62 mm nato M118.  It looks just like the new leupolds.  However, the scope looks like it is a few years old.  Optics are really good.  I have just never heard of L & S Inc.  Someone told me that this scope had something to do with leupold but I cant find any info online about it.  Please let me know if you guys have ever heard of it.

Welcome to Optics Talk.

That would be a Leupold & Stevens Ultra 10x with M3 knobs.

It's one of their "real" Mark 4's, built with heavy walled tube, tough internal construction, etc, for military use.   The M118 marking tells you what ammo the BDC is designed for, there are several available.  It's a heck of a scope, not cheap either http://www.swfa.com/pc-2895-297-leupold-10x40-mark-4-lrt-30mm-riflescope.aspx .

Just a side note but should you determine you do not like the 1moa per click elevation and 1/2  moa per click windage Leupold can change the knobs to the M1 style 1/4 moa per click. Many an unknowing person has purchased an M3 scope then not been really happy with the coarseness of the 1 moa adjustment, but this is a gunfight scope where you can not get lost in the dial as it will adjust to 1000 meters in one turn of the dial. I have had one so if you have any questions just ask.

I'm guessing it came on a .308 right?

Thanks so much with the response!  I felt like it was a good scope considering the rifle it came on, (belonged to Carlos Hathcocks sniper school in Mississippi, they had 4 made to Carlos specs by a gun builder named Robert Wells) but I wasn't sure and I couldn't find any info on it.  I knew that you guys could help.  I have visited this site many times to find info but I never had a question to ask.  Is there any way to determine how old it is.  The serial number is 340784.  And what would a scope like this cost, I am not interested in selling, but I would like to know how good of a deal I got in this package.  Thanks for all the help.  Also, is there any extra info on the web that I can learn any more about these scopes. Thanks!

Just checked out the swfa link and I would say that is it, but is L & S an older name for it?  When did they make these scopes?  Thanks!

Leupold keeps track of all their serial numbers so they would be able to tell you when it was made.  SWFA sells them for $1430 new

Thanks guys! It all makes since now.  I have owned a half dozen leupolds, primarily hunting scopes and I have never seen the L & S designation before.  I guess I have never noticed the Stevens in their name.  I feel a lot better!  I was just hoping this wasn't some off the wall cheap tac scope!

Absolutely!!!!  The rifle is #2 of 4 that the Hathcock family and the head sniper instructor at Carlos' sniper school had built after Carlos died.  They asked Robert Wells in Waynesboro, MS, who had been a personal gunsmith and gunbuilder to Carlos while he instructed at his school, to build 4 rifles to Carlos' personal specs.  The first rifle (#1) would go to the head instructor at the school and it had a black stock, while the other 3 would be sold and have olive drab stock.  One (#3) went to an FBI sniper, the other (#4) to a law enforcement sniper, both who had worked with the sniper school.  I got #2!  And I got it at a really good deal b/c I live in Waynesboro and know the builder, Robert Wells and the gun dealer that had the rights to sell them.  The gun dealer kept this one (#2) back for himself.  He has had it for several years.  I am good friends with him.  He has gotten in to collector cars and I traded him a 1968 Mercury Cougar for it.  The car needs a lot of work and I'm not going to do it.  So we traded.  I know what the gun cost to build, north of $3,500 and now I know what the scope is worth.  So I think I did good!  By the way, this is the best rifle I have ever seen.  Everything that could be done has been done.  It is the real deal!

You should attempt to get letters of authentisity from both the gunsmith builder and the Hathcock sniper school if possible and protect them as they may well add to the collectable value of this rifle which likely exceeds it's cost and useful value.  No doubt it is a fine rifle and it would be worth more if originally owned by Carlos Hathcock but having been built to his specs by his gunsmith in an order placed by his sniper school is worth something and as much of a legend as he has become you really may have a museum piece there.  If possible could you post some photos for us as I'm sure everyone here would enjoy seeing them.

I already have several letters to state where it came from.  I believe that it will be a very special rifle in the years to come.  I will get some pics up so everyone can see!
