I am considering SS10x42 for my new 700SS 5R. I am needing some help with selection of the base. I was recommended the EGW 20 MOA one piece. Is there an advantage of one piece vs two piece base? What height rings should I get. Is it a personal preference or a matter of function? Also, will the 10x42 be enough power the shoot out to 600 yards? (current range does not go to 1000) Thanks, as I new to this tactical shooting.

A one piece base is viewed by many as a more rigid platform than a split base, and some say that it re-enforces the receiver.
One plus for the 1 piece unit is a better chance of having both rings in alignment, lessening torsional forces impsed on the scope.

A flat base is fine with the SS1042, there's 1400 yards worth of elevation in that unit depending on caliber ( 308 winchester ranges quoted ).

10x is more than enough for 600 yards.  Folks shoot open sighted to 1000 yards every week so any magnification is a plus.  Don't confuse magnification with accuracy,  that part is all up to you.

As to rings, type and height are your preference.  If bench shooting you might decide on higher rings than prone shooting, where you'd prefer the scope be as close to the bore as possible.

Plus 1 on what Mike said! I have an EGW flat rail on my Savage, and even with low rings, the objective is about 3/8" above the top of the barrel. That being said, there are lower profile rails available. The new EGW HD base is supposed much lower, and made of a harder aluminum alloy. TPS bases and rings are also widely recommended.

On Savage model 10's fple I use EGW 0moa bases with Burris or SS XTR low rings and have plenty of clearence for scope covers and get a good cheek weld shooting from the bench.

Thanks for the responses. You guys have been helpful. Looks like I will go with the one piece base and the SS 10x42. Now, just one more question. I was looking at the Burris XTR rings, but read a couple of bad reviews. Any recommendations on the rings that won't cost a small fortune, but will still hold up and hold zero?
