I'm looking at ordering a Sako 85 and I'm confused as hell by the scope mounting. Do the 85 and 75 use the same mounting system? I'm able to find quite a few mounts listed for the 75, but hardly anything for the 85. I would like to go with a quick detatch system since I intend to have 2 diferent scopes for the rifle.
Thanks in advance. |

2000Z-71. Do a search for Sako 85. I tried answering a lot of these questions to ad nauseam in the thread 'Sako 85 and Khales'. But the short answer is the 85 will use the same mounting system as the 75. The two systems I concentrated on were the Leupold Quick Release and the Talley Quick-Detachable but there are others. I called both manufacturers to confirm suitability.
One thing worth mentioning that I've learned since my last post in that thread is that the rear dovetail on the 85 has a slightly different design than the 75. This does affect the position of the rear base of both mounting systems. In both cases I found that the rear base will mount further forward on the dovetail.
With the Leupold QR the rear base will overhang the loading/ejection port by about a 1/4" whereas with the 75 the same base is almost flush. Leupold has no plans to redesign the rear base as the QR feature requires a certain mininum dimension. Look at a QR on a Remington 700 and you'll see the same overhang.
The Talley QD rear base will overhang also but only about 1/8", no big deal. I did find that using a short action Talley QD rear base (from my 75) on my new medium action 85 did fit and did not have any overhang. I don't know how either rear base will fit on a short action 85.
As to function they both seem to work well. The Talley system looks cleaner and is very strong and that is what I'll probably end up using. Although I must say the Talley Rings can be a challenge to fasten to the scope. Good luck.
