OK, for the sake of this explanation, let's pick one brand and use their product lines as a way to help me understand my question. Let's use Nikon, for example. What are the differences between their different product lines of rifle scopes (e.g. Prostaff/Buckmaster/Monarch)? When you pay more for a Monarch, what are you really paying for? Is it better light transmission only, or am I missing something else? If that's the case, would a 50mm Prostaff be the same brightness as a 40mm Monarch?
And on another note... what are, if any, the real differences between brands (aside from paying for a brand name like Leupold, and aside from the true high-end scopes like Nightforce, etc)?? Is a Nikon 5-15x40 pretty much the same thing as a Bushnell 5-15x40? Sorry if this is vague, just trying to decide how to spend my scope money - any help is greatly appreciated! |

Well, this forum debates those questions 24/7, and can seldom come up with a universal consensus on much of anything. The T-bone optical rating scale is arguably the best place to do general comparisons, though.
You have to remember that performance is kind of subjective, in the sense that certain qualities which are important to one shooter may be of less priority to another.
One may place low-light performance at the top of his list, while another may want durability at any cost, for example.
You really need to spend some time here to get a sense of some of the attributes of various scopes. Some advantages of one over another are actually quite subtle. Edited by RONK - March/24/2008 at 18:38 |

Light transmission only? Man it's not like something made by New Venure...
You have things alot of things. And that starts with coatings and ends with stray reflections that are optical version of noise. Some high lights are resolution (abilty to see details) and color clarity. Then there are things like being able to see better at the edge of the scope.
There are a lot of differance between brands. Things like field of view and eye relief. Then scopes personalities, like how smooth the controls work in cold weather and thier related sweet spots. Then there are things like the personality of the service departments.
