I want to buy an Eotech for my AR-15, I am down to the new 558 or EXPS2.  I like that the 558 runs on AA batteries and lasts twice as long as the EXPS2.  I am terrified of the reports regarding the battery issues when the compartment is parallel with the rifle - but it seems odd that their newest products still have them and accessories (i.e. - new laser battery cap)  I will likely add the G33 to whichever one I buy.  My use is range and home defense.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to optics Talk.

Have you ever used, or considered an Aimpoint? Battery life is largely a non issue with the Aimpoints.

I did, but I really like the larger circle surrounding the red dot for quick target acquisition and feel like I can move my head more and still see the red dot with the eotech. Really personal preference, I know aimpoint makes an awesome product.

10/4. I have no experience with the newer Eo's so I'll let others address their pro's and con's. I did have a 553 once.

Thanks again for your reply. How did you like the 553? Did you have any problems with the battery connection?

I liked it OK, but I'm an Aimpoint guy. I find the "Donut of Death" unnecessary, frankly. I do get that others like them though. I have better things to do than worry about the battery life on the EO's. I find that exhausting. "Is it going to work when I need it"? "Do I have extra's"? I'm still on my very FIRST battery that came with my Micro and that was over 3 or 4 years ago. I keep it on 24/7 too.

After the advent of the Micro's, it's gonna be a while before I switch.

Thanks for the pictures, and the replies.  I agree the battery thing is not ideal at all, I just wish I didn't like the red dot so much on the EOTech.  The other really hard part, is there is no Aimpoint dealer in my area and I have to drive over 2hrs to actually see one in person.

Understood. There's a ton of folks that like them. The CS on Eotech is second to none too.

The Hive should be back from holidays during the week and can address your question directly.

Good shooting and enjoy your stay here.

I have had my Eotech since 07 and I have not had any issues with it. Mine didn't have the AA batteries, but some other battery type. Don't remember off hand what the battery type is though. If I could have purchased one that used AAs that would have been ideal for me. Since if I need batteries AAs are everywhere. For me I like the Eotech over the Aimpoint since I prefer the 1 MOA dot over the larger dot. But it is certainly a personal preference. And if having the battery compartment that is parallel with the rifle was a big issue I think it would have been changed.

Yes, ive heard of the battery shift problem.I have a EXPS3 with a G23 magnifier. I bought this because of the battery shift problem. The side mount 123 battery doesnt have this problem because of the side mount. The G33 magnifier is better and will work with almost all Eotech holo-sights.

Behind NVG, I like the EoTech okay.  For all (literally, EVERY) other applications, I prefer Aimpoint, battery life is only one consideration.

I know the pixilated reticle isn't supposed to be an issue, I just don't like it.  Kinda like scope tunneling, it doesn't really impact function, it just bugs me.

I hope you like the EoTech, let us know how it goes.

You will love the G33. It flips out of the way when you need to see up close. Dont worry about the battery life of the holograph. Have the same battery in mine, and I use it all the time. Bought it on 3/2012.
