I want to take advantage of the price SWFA has on NIkon scopes right now.  I am looking at the Monarch UCC

5.5-16.5 X44 or

6-20X44

I'm mainly hunting varmints (yotes and rock chucks) with deer hunting in the fall. My farthest shot at a varmint will be 400 yds.  I shoot at paper out to 800.

My rifle is a custom mauser 98 in 6.5 SE. Currently, I have a Tasco 6-24X42 (I know....buy cheap buy twice) and I don't like how touchy it is with eye relief and it is terrible in low light conditions.  I've read posts now for several days about the Monarch scopes and I think they are the way to go.  My $ limit this time is $500.

Does anyone have experience with the higher magnification Nikons in relation to low light performance and is the BCD reticle really useable?  I hate to give up the mil-dot retical.

Thanks

LAN

I own 2 of the 6-20s monarchs. one a plex, one a dot (not mildot), great scopes and equal to a VX
III 6.5-20x40. I have a Burris with their version of a BDC and it works fine but they all clutter things
up. If you have a rangefinder and know your trajectory you dont need it. neither RCs or yotes are
small and at 400 wind is usually more of an issue than range estimation. what's a 6.5 SE?

Asphunter,

Thanks for the info.  I don't have a rangefinder yet, but that's next on the list.

I didn't get the whole caliber designation typed in for some reason, but the caliber is a 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser.  I usually shoot 140g gamekings at 2800 ft/sec and 107g matchkings at around 2950 ft/sec.  It is an excellent long range rifle with 140g BCs around .550.  Now I need an excellent long range scope to match it.
