Hi Everybody and thank you for your help.

I am trying to decide on a new scope for my Ruger American .270 Win.  This gun will be used for deer hunting exclusively.  95% of my shots come within 100 yards, with a max possible distance of 200 yards, though very unlikely.  I'm looking for something that is really good in low light situations and good for hunting in thick cover.  My budget is around $300.  I would like to go more but I am in college.  I am currently looking at the leupold VX line because the large eye relief seems really nice.  What other scopes should I be looking at? Thank you.

Good 3-12 or some such will do you just fine.

3-9 as well. Don't go too small on the objective and for low light an illuminated reticle is good.

Wouldn't worry about ballistic turrets for hunting with 270 win. Good enough MPBR to zero at 200yds then point and shoot

There are tons of choices that would fill your need. A basic 3-9 x40 (or similar) is offered by many companies. The Leupy you mentioned is fine as would a Vortex, Sightron, Burris, Bushnell, Weaver, etc. I'd recommend you go through the Sample List (here) and see what interests you.

Oh ok, so it sounds like I would be alright with a Leupold VX-2 3-9 x 40? Is this a decent scope as far as quality for price is concerned?

Don't forget the 2-7X scopes for your needs. Many are well within your price range and are great brush gun scopes for close up and still have enough magnification for shots past 300yds..

This would be an easy choice for me if I were in the OP's situation.  The Leupold FX3 6x42 with heavy duplex is very bright, very rugged, and you can see the reticle in heavy cover in very poor light.  If not, I'd look at the Meopta 6x42 with #4.   Variables not necessary in this application, IMO.

I would look at the Bushnell 3500.  That way you get rainguard.

They want an extra $50 for the German #4 in that VX2 3-9x! And no heavy duplex either. Who beats Leupold 2-7x VX2 with a heavy or lit reticle in the under $300 range?
