I inadvertently started a fairly lengthy discussion on good glass vs. magnification on OT last Sept. There was a lot of good input, which I appreciated, but most of it was centered around seeing .223 holes at 100 yards, my range distance at the time.

I have since graduated to 220 yards and now need a riflescope that will let me see .223 holes at that distance.  I have the biggest Shoot-N-C targets I can find plus some gray-on-white ones of my own making, but I don't think 9x or 10 x is going to make it for me at 220 yards no matter how good the glass.

How high do I have to go, in dollars and magnification, to see .223 holes at 220 yards?

Before this gets into a "get a good spotting scope" discussion, I have tried both the non-ED and the ED versions of the Vortex Skyline 80 20-60x80 spotting scopes.  The scope plus a tripod sturdy enough to support it are way too heavy, bulky and cumbersome to be hauling around and setting up and both had bothersome chromatic aberration, so I'm looking for a riflescope that will do the job.  What's the least $ and magnification I can get by with?

I'm guessing you won't find the answer to your question here...... but rather, on the range using your eyes!  Good luck.

p.s.... i don't know anything about the Skyline, but it's possible you need a better spotting scope than that!

Seems like you'll end up with a scope that's heavy to lug around. And unlike a good spotter, you won't have the option of leaving it behind when you're not at the range. I'm not against big scopes entirely, having placed a 38 oz. scope on one of my rifles, but it's not the rifle I carry around in the hills all the time.

I use a SS 20x on my range guns and can see 223 holes fine. The best $279 dollars I've spent on a scope. I have them on 223,308,25-06,& a7mm, 3of them are 20" barrel Savage LE's and one is a 26" varmint. My eyes are now 58 years old and these scopes work wonders at that range. I think there is one on the sample list for $249.

Thanks for the ideas.  I agree it can't be too big and heavy or I haven't gained anything.  And I've looked at the SS 20x. The price is certainly right but I don't want to be confined to just one power because my .223 will be used for more than just bench shooting.

I'm looking at the Nikon Monarch 5-20x44 side focus. Only 19 oz. and ~ 14". Any good words for it?

The resolution power of the human eye is ~1 minute of arc (60 sec. of arc). The field angle of a 0.223 hole at 100 yards is ~ 13 sec. With a 10x magnification the hole is seen under an angle of ~2 min. This is not to much for an old or tired eye.
In the case of 220 yards, the  field angle of the hole is less than 6 sec.  This means that the objective diameter should have at least 42 mm, better = or >50mm. With a 24x magnification the hole appears under an angle of ~2 min.
Thinking of the target contrast and observation conditions, a 36x42 quality riflescope or better a 9-36x56 could be ideal.

a good something around (zeiss diavari, premier, etc) 20x will "see" the holes if the contrast is good, after that it depends more on the position of the sun. an 8x32nf br works well at the higher mags, -- if its a bright day.
