Well, I just finsished an SPR AR-15 build i was working on for a while... only thing it's missing is an optic.... to be completely honest, when it comes to optics, I am lost and need some direction. The main purpose of the build is for distance/long range, and with that in mind I also would like to be able to engage in CQ if necessary. With that said, i am considering something like the Burris TAC30 Fullfiend 1-4x24 w/ PEPR Mount, with a Burris Fastfire II sitting on top for CQ or Vortex Viper PST.... the main issue is monetary and would like to stay $500 or less. I know that puts a damper on options but its what i am working with right now...

What do you guys recommend? I've heard good things about both mfgs. but have no first hand usage with them... the only optics ive ever bought and used are Aimpoint, EOTECH and a Vortex SPARC.

Cheers

Define "long range."
What is the intended target?

Just going off what you have described, I feel it would be a waste IMO to use the Burris.

Since it is a true 1X, you shouldn't need the fast fire. You can use the the FF on 1X and aquire targets like you would with an Aimpoint.

Out of those two, I would choose the PST. But if you could hold out, I would actually save a litte more and go with the SS.

Since it is also true 1X, you can utilize it the same way, it has daytime visible illumination, FFP and .10 Mil/Mil adjustments.

You can see how it compares to S&B and Night force here.

Since you mentioned long range, you may want to entertain something that has more magnification. Outside of four hundred yards, I wouldn't think a 1-4 would be practical. You may want to entertain, using  something in a 3-15 or 4-16 and then using a RMR of the side for CQB.

You could use a mount like the Warne Ramp mount and put your RMR of to the side.

When you are working with $500 you will have to make some compromises.
Lets start with a good solid mount. If you want quick detachable that is Bobro or La Rue.

Over time you can add some BUIS like these that lay to the side or put a red dot to the right side.

If you do not want a Quick Detachable mount the Asdland is as solid as a rock.
If you will ever mount a red dot it is cheaper to buy the ring with the rail initially as that piece alone is $69.95

For your role I would totally get a SS 3-9x.  http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-3-9x42-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P50716.aspx

Dependable, great glass, great mag range.  3x is good enough for occasional close range shooting, and if you find it is not then a setup like the sights posted above could fix that.  It has exposed knobs with adjustments that match the awesome reticle it has.  It was designed for the SPR type rifle.

The SS 3-9 or the new SS 3-15 would be great choices if you could spend the difference.

What about the MTAC with a 3.5-10x? after checking out the link, i dont really care for the burris' reticle... i am liking that SS alot! seems like the reticle might be too much going on....

thanks for all your help! i greatly appreciate it....although i am still stuck in the research phase...i dont want to purchase multiple scopes to find out which one is best and i am new to the long range scene so forgive my lack of knowledge on them

i dont know how i feel about the angled mount versus the top mount for an RMR&nbs

Since you are researching, I would use the 3-15.

But I'm not sure how far you are shooting. By defining you term of long range, several of us, would be able to help you.

Long range is very subjective. To some us here, we would define LR as 800 yards and beyond. Some may define LR as 300 yards.

as i mentioned in my above post sir, about 500-600 meters with this rifle....that is suffice for now as anything outside that for me would be hard to even find the range where i am

i appreciate the help.... thanks!

I apologize for the oversight there.

I really think the 3-15 would be your best bet.

Then you can implement, what was discussed early with the offset BUIS from Surefire or implement some sort of reflex sight like Docter, Trijicon, or the Burris Fast fire for CQB.
