First, let me say, I am a hunter, not a shooter.
I recently purchased a pair of Zeis binoculars, the problem is, I can see clearly through the binoculars long after I can see through my Leopold VX-2 3x9x40 scope on my Remington 700 7mag. I am looking for a high end scope to replace the Leopold VX-2, and I am currently leaning toward the Swarovski 3-18x50 Z6 30 mm scope. With this kind of price tag, 2,245.95 at SWFA, would I be better off with a different scope? I want something clear, with a high upper magnification to prevent shooting button heads when i am shooting does, but something I can see the big hog with when he comes out when I am stretching legal shooting hours. also, any advice on what rings o use on it? Thanks in advance for any advice. |

I have a pair of Zeiss RF bino's and have the same issue you do with cheaper scopes. I bought a Swaro Z6 and while it is a huge improvement, I still cannot see as well with it as with my bino's. Probably the whole two eyes vs one eye thing.
A Swaro, Leica, or high end Zeiss will all be your best bet. The Leupold VX 6 is also supposed to be a pretty good scope optically. Probably not quite as good as the others, but a lot cheaper. Meopta also has some great optics. Probably 95% of the optical quality of the big boys Talley ring mounts would be my choice for rings. |

The only scopes I've had hands on that come close to matching Ziess binos is the Ziess Diavari, Khales or IOR Valdada. I won't say that some of Leupold"s newer scopes won't work but I would not be willing to spend that kinda $$ to find out. The three I mentioned will absolutely get you a "shooting after hours ticket" so you have to keep up with legal shootin times every time you go. But with the clarity of their glass and a good power ring you can identify what you are lookin at most of the time. I can't count the number of times they have helped me identify and pass on a button head. And to add, I am going this week to pickup the nicest heavy rack ole buck I have taken. And that due to the Ziess Diavari mounted on my 300wm. I had the ole boy on camera for two yrs. and watched him over the yrs gain mass but loose point count. Trouble was he was only movin from 2 hrs after shootin time until 4am. But I knew where he was atleast. Had about 4 days left in season and decided to give em a try anyway. Got to the stand two hrs before dark and waited. Corn pile was 160yds and the wind was good. Couple doe kept me entertained for about an hr and started watching the woods. About 20 min. left to quitin time and they headed back toward where they came out from. I'm thinking "this may be another water haul but I'm gonna stay with it". I checked my watch 3 min left. I'm glassin checkin for anything movin. I'm facing the wood line the corn was on lookin South to North and the sunset is over my left shoulder. So the corn pile is in the darker shadows of what little light is left. I catch some movement near the corn and try to make some antlers but there just is not enough light. But, I have hunted long enough and watched deer enough to recognize that this deer is moving like a buck. I can't be sure if it is "the buck" but I'm gonna find out. I check my watch and I have just about a minute left. I put the 300wm on the screw in step I had put there for a rest and have no trouble seeing the critter. Still can't make antlers but at 16power it is clear that it is a good size deer. Seconds are clickin by so I steady the dot where I want it and fire. After the recoil I look and see belly shining. All that is left now is to see what was waiting for me at the corn pile. Man howdy!!! I get about 30yds to it and the chocolate colored rack is getting bigger and bigger. Score!! The ole boy must have figured he'd slip in alittle early that day. Sure glad he did. He had dropped to six point but was 20 1/2 wide and about that tall. And liked an inch touching fingers around the bases. All that to say, I don't care how good your rifle is, if you can't see what you are shootin. What is the point???? I urge anyone who will listen to get the best you can afford. When my huntin buddy told me he paid 2400.00 for his Diavari I was convinced that I needed to get him to the doc asap. He clearly had bumped his head. But after seeing first hand what the thing was capable of (over time) I became just as insane as he had. I can't justify cheap anymore. If for no other reason than I hate to know I would be wasting my time or risking not being able to make the shot because my scope can't go the distance. Sorry for the book but I couldn't help myself. Supertool knows rings and Talley are solid for sure. I use Leupold/Burris bases because I like to adjust windage to zero on the base and save windage in the scope for dope. I also use DNZ. Use what you have confidence in. Welcome to the OT! |

Concur with above. A lot may come down to what reticle you desire and how it looks to your eyes. Me personally, I like Swaros. Have had (or do have) most all of the "big boys" offerings and they all will spoil you to be sure. All seem to have pluses and minuses. |

Thanks Guys, I was leaning heavily toward the Swaros, and you all seem to be confirming my decision.
I recently had the wife hunt with me, and when she looked throught the Zeis binos she was really surprised at the clarity, i explained to her that the scope i now have is no where near as clear, and i was looking to upgrade. She asked how much (of course she would right), when i hesitated, she asked again, i told her in the 2500 range, her response, "oh that's all? I thought you were going to say 5000", she doesn't hunt, but I think I have a keeper. This Boar stepped out with enough light for my old Leopold to do the job Saturday evening

Cfalcon there is a minimum post count of 50 to post pics. or edit post. I am sure you can send the pic to any of the mods and they can put it in your post. I could post it in another post but a mod can get it in where it needs to be. In almost anything goes there is a thread called boost your post count. Use it freely to increase your count.

The Swarovski will be an outstanding scope for you, I think. I have a 1-6Z6i and really like it.
