The myriad of choices has overwhelmed me.

I have a .223 bolt rifle, 26" stainless varmint weight barrel that I shoot from 75 to 300 yards. I shoot paper, vermin...whatever. I don't shoot for a living or to save a life or to put meat on the table. I don't shoot in competition. I don't shoot at dusk or in low light conditions.

I will shoot on-sale bulk .223 ammo. When I shoot longer range I do resort to handloads but it almost doesn't pay to roll your own.

I'm really unsure about which reticle.

I'm looking for a good selection of scopes that I can find at a decent discount price...I'd really rather not spend over $500.00.

I wish there was a database wizard that I could put in my criteria and it spit out a selection of candidates.

The SWFA 3-9x42 is hard to beat for the price and quality, and would probably fit your needs as stated unless your shooting golf balls at 300yds. It might be a little over your budget, but it has more versatility over fixed powers, it's first focal plane Mil Quad reticle adds to that, and if you wanted to change your shooting routine a little you may not be looking for a new scope.

Based on your intent I would buy this scope.

I have a bolt 223 that is crazy accurate and would get that one if I needed a scope for it. Even though 300yds isn't that far I prefer being able to have good power (16X+) to pull up a good detailed clear picture of my target. Especially if shooting paper and wanting to see my hits. As for loading if you can go ahead and buy bulk you do come out some better, and in my experience I haven't found any factory ammo that performs near as good as what I can load. At least that isn't 18 to 24.00 a box. The issue with reloading is always up to the individual's goals and available time and patients.

The Nikon Prostaff and Monarch scopes have proven to be way above average in glass, coatings and turret quality. They are way under priced for their performance.

Good Luck! and welcome to the OT.

I have seen the Nikon seems to have reviews that always rate it excellent value.

Nearly all my variable power scopes spend their entire life on max power. The only one I dial back is my 5x20 and that is only to find the target at ranges over 600m. I've settled on a fixed 10 power scope for all business under 300m. I think variable scopes are over rated for all but long distance shooting. YMMVBig Grin

Ballistic Plex Burris 4.5-14x42 Fullfield II Rifle Scope
I have 2 of these and they have served me well. The B-plex fits well with curve of the 223 out to 400 yards with only a little tweaking. In anywhere near the price range it is hard to beat the clarity of the Burris glass.
