I am looking for a reasonable price scope under 700.00 for long distance shooting . like to shoot 1000 yards. Do not want a BDC Scope .  What brand and model would do the job on a cheaper savage in 308 cal with a 20 moa scope base ? I need something with lots of up down travel. thanks. marty

Keep in mind that what ever brand you get you will need a 30mm tube or larger and a 20 to 40 moa scope base. Also try to get a scope with target turrets that track well. You can shoot 1000yds with standard hunting turrets but they usually don't track all that well and are a hassle to adjust. And bare in mind that side focus is a big plus when shooting prone and staying on the trigger. Let us know what you get and Welcome to the OT.

Welcome to the OT.  I would say go take a look at the samplelist.  There are a number of interesting scopes there that may fit your needs.  That is always the first place I look when looking for a bargain.  There are some real DEALS to be had there.

THANKS FOR THE INFO.

One more question... would a 20 moa scope mount be enough to shoot 1000 yards or would be 40 moa be better ? I still want to be able to shoot 100 yards. would be a savage 308 cal. rifle. thanks. marty

It really depends on the load you choose to shoot. For duel purpose I'd go with a 20 moa and consider that on lighter loads you may have to use some hold over at 1000yds. If you have no issue with higher recoil from heavier bullets for hunting and distance shooting then the 20 moa is still the better choice. 40 moa is more towards a dedicated distance rifle. There are always trade offs to consider too. If you aren't always going to have a spotter to help you track your bullet hits then you need managed recoil so you can track the hits yourself. Your options are lighter grain bullets or a muzzle brake. Its all a puzzle you have to piece together to fit what you are trying to accomplish.

An example is, I shoot a Remington 700 300WM for hunting (168gr. Berger) and 1000yds (185gr Berger). I have a 20 moa base which doesn't offer much towards hunting unless I have to shoot out to 1000yds. (hasn't happened yet). But loading 185gr. Berger VLD's I have to still use 1 mil hold over to ring steel at 1000yds. And with the 185's I rarely get to see bullet strikes. If I had a 40 moa I doubt it would limit a short shot but it would give me more turret for distance.

You want a plus 20 MOA base not more do not buy plus 30 MOA base and if you use a ringmount that has cant built into it be careful that the total cant is only 20 MOA.  Honestly any scope with 100 moa of internal adjustment will take a .308 from 100 to 1000 with a flat base.
I load the 190 gr Sierra matchking in .308 for long range you want a heavy bullet.
