I have been a fan of savage rifles for some time. They sure aren't pretty, but they are accurate. Last year I picked up a savage FP10

(.308, 26" heavy bbl, with the new "light trigger" I did not splurge on an expensive scope at the time, ended up with a simmons 4X12 44

The rifle is a tack driver, however, I hate the scope! It always seems a little...ya know, funny. Blacks out if you are not in perfect alignment, and a little "hazy" at times.

O.K. now to the question: I really want the ability to zooom way in on a target (we have some HUGE wheat and soybean fields) I have the 1" weaver rings, so I'd like to stay with a 1" tube. I will be saving every nickle I can and want to spend say $350- $450 or so. Nedd a few suggestions from the experts.

Thanks!

The Bushnell Elite 4200 scope is a great scope and the price on this scope is in my opinion lower than it should be for the quality you are getting. Full Lifetime warrantyalso.

I'm not exactly an expert, but the Nikon Monarch, and Leupold VX-II would be high end names to consider in your price range. The VX-III may get a bit out of your suggested range at the levels of magnification you would seem to want (though it is a great scope!). The Bushnell Elite 4200 and the Weaver Grand Slam are both amongst the best quality values in your budget for the features you want, as is the Weaver V series.

Since your aim is hunting, rather than simply target shooting at a distance, my guess is that in addition to a high zoom you would appreciate a high level of variation, as you might also want to take some closer shots at lower levels of magnification. Thus you might appreciate something like the V series, which offers a range of 4 times between the lowest and highest settings. That is, you could chose either a 4-16 or a 6-24 scope, as opposed to the more common 4-12, 6-18, or 6.5-20 (usually really 6.5-19.5?).

Wiow can't believe that the Vortex vipers have not been mentioned by this time. The 6.5-20 with a target dot is on sale for about $250 as is the 4-12 scopes.

Welcome to OT, arksteele!  This is obviously a contender for the "best first thread title" award!
