I see that Browning riflescopes are on closeout at many dealers, and was wondering what the deal with them is. I know they are made by Bushnell, but what are the comprable to, also, what kind of waranty they come with? I'm looking at the 8x24.

Also, the other scopes I'm looking at are the Weaver V24, and the Super Sniper 20x, of these three, which would you go with for target shooting with a .308 at 500yds?

Welcome to The OT, my friend!!

(You signed up in 04 as this is your first post?)

Before The Hive here can help you to your fullest benefit, we must know your "drop dead budget".

Meaning, as much money as you can spend on an optic, without your wife leaving you.

Yep. this is my first post, call me a long time lurker. As for my drop dead budget, 350-360 is all I can swing. Scopes also being considered are the Nikon Monarch 6.5-20 Refurb off Samplelist, and a new Weaver Grandslam 6-20 that I'm working on a pricematch with, I havent gotten an answer yet, but it should bring the price down to $335. So basically the scopes I'm considering are:

Browning 8-24x40 at $239

Refurbished Nikon Monarch at $319... Supposodly only has 90 day waranty, this moves it to the bottom of the pile.

Pricematch new Weaver Grandslam 6-20x40 at $335?

Weaver V24 at $330

Super Sniper 20x at $299+ $40 for 30mm rings

Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21x40 at $359

As I said before, all I'm really looking to do is target shoot at 500yds with a Remington VLS .308, and maybe do a little deer hunting on the side.

The 10x42 Super Sniper is a fine choice. If you are ever going to hunt the rifle you will find that a high powered 20x scope goes dark at the time when the game starts coming out right before dark. 10x would do fine at 500 yds, it would look the same as open sights at 50 yds.  As for hunting --- a variable that goes to higher powers, while still allowing use at lower power, is more useable than a fixed high power. While you could  use the 10x42 SS as a target / hunting  scope with reasonable success you would find it challenging to use the 20x42 SS in the same manner, not impossible but challenging, I have done it and do not recommend it.  Why dont you look at something in the 4-14x40 range

The reason for wanting the higher power ranges is, as I said, my primary use for this rifle is long distance target shooting, any deer hunting I will do with it will be as a lark, I've already got a number of proper deer rifles, scoped with suitable scopes such as 3-9 and 3.5-10 conquests and a few 3-9 leupolds.

As long as you understand what exit eye pupil means as far as how bright the optic appears jump on it.

6x42    42divided by 6 = 7mm exit eye pupil  this is bright - as much light as you can use

10x42  42 divided by 10= 4.2 mm exit eye pupil

20x42  42 divided by 20 = 2.1mm exit eye pupil

I suggest this take one of your scopes out at twilight and look at 10x then look at 6x then look at 10x and cover half of the scope with your hand to represent how much light a 20x lets in that will give you an idea what it is like.

Well, after chatting with browning sports optics division about the waranty of their scopes, I decided to roll the dice and give one a try. I'll post a review when I get it, should be later this week.
