Looking for a scope for my new RRA .223 Varmint A4.  I plan on using this rifle to hone my shooting skills at longer distances (400- 500 yards) but it will probably see the most action in the 100-300 yard range.   This rifle won’t be used for hunting - just punching paper, plinking steel and having fun at various distances.  I’ve spent hours researching scopes Whacko and have narrowed my selection down to the following:

Leupold Mark AR 3-9x40 @ $299

Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 @$389

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 @ $399

Nikon Monarch 3-12x42SF @$410

Leupold VX-3 3.5-1-x40 CDS @ $480

I have no experience with any of these scopes and although doing side-by-side comparisons based on specs and reviews is a good exercise, I’d like advice from experienced shooters who have actually used this gear or who are familiar with it.

I like the Mark AR because it’s a Leupold, it’s only $300 and it has a BDC dial which is really appealing but then for only $100 more, I can get the Zeiss and then......and then......   I’m willing to spend more if there is a compelling reason to do so for the kind of shooting I’m doing.  Also, I’m not really sure which power to go with - I don’t have any reference point.  For example, is a 3x9 adequate to hit a paper plate at 400 yards assuming I do my part?  Is it adequate to hit a clay pigeon? If not, what is the minimum power to do so?  I’d rather buy a lower power scope that has more clarity than a higher power that doesn’t.  Finally, I’m not sure which reticule to buy.  I’m leaning to a duplex but the mil-dot benefits seem significant – I’m just not sure about the clutter.  I’d appreciate any and all help you could provide.  Thanks

The minimum power is based upon preference and eyesight. If you can see a paper plate at 100 yrds, and can hit that pretty well center mass. Then you can use a 4 power scope, and see the paper plate at what would look like 100 yrds. There is then also, your preference for glass quality. Image is an important thing to consider. I think you would like the Burris XTR that has a ballistic reticle.

But... It is hard to beat the Conquest.
