Gene and I both killed our Merriams' turkey this morning.  After being stuck for 13.5 hours in Chicago yesterday, we finally made it to Omaha at 2400 last night and drove to Broken Bow, arriving at 0400 this morning. We made it to bed at 0430 and the outfitter called us at 0515 to hit the woods.  Took til about 0530 to get out the door and got to the hunting area at a little after 0610.  Gene killed his turkey at 0638, I got mine at 0825.  Mine was bigger...
Sean Scott of Scott Outdoors has nearly 20000 acres of hunting land and hunts 8-10 peoplle for turkeys every year...  the Merriams' turkeys are absolutely beautiful.  Not pressured at all.  What a hunt.  I enjoyed this one a lot.  Gene now has three of the four for his "grand slam".  He has the Osceola, the Rio Grande, and the Merriams'.  He is going for the Eastern next week.  Sean told him if he has any trouble, call and he guarantees they can get one in Kansas...  Sean and his wife are great people and I am glad I made this hunt, glad I met them.

Pictures to come after I get home.  I might get some rest.

Congrats Dan.  Glad you got your turkey but not as happy as I am for Gene, he needed it more than you

All,
I have a refound and deep respect for the "heart of America", for the people of this GREAT country.  I am so glad to have had the opportunity to hunt Nebraska, to meet its people, to be a part of what this country is really all about.  The heart and soul of the American people is still here, still strong, still singing loud and clear.  I can't say I have ever had a better hunting experience, a better comeraderie with people in general, a better "communion with nature and man".  I've seen the beauty of the American spirit, it is alive in the "Heartland" and it has reinvigorated me.  I've .  been a little "jaded" over the last few years, this trip has given me new hope, new vigor, new love.  Nebraska is a wonderful, a great State in this great Republic and I am honoed and proud to have been able to interact with a small portion of its personnel.  I've met a microcosm of what Nebraska represents, and it is GOOD.

I love America and have been reminded of what it is that I love about it, what it is that makes us what we are, what makes us better than the rest. One of the best weekends I have ever spent...

and, on top of that, I got to meet Wes face to face.  He is not imaginary, but a true friend, I am so glad to have been able to finally shake his hand, to talk to him in person.  If you haven't met him, you are missing a lot... a true "man's man", humorous, happy, great to converse with.  I really hope to do it again soon.

God Bless America, Happy Easter... HE is risen...

Maybe someday I'll be able to get one of those.  I had one in Iraq, but a soldier asked for it so I gave it to him...

He is doing very well.  Gone off with Sean Scott to Kansas to get his Eastern and complete his Grand Slam... Sean guaranteed him he would put him on a gobbler.  The guy is good...
