I am looking for a new scope for my Ruger American rifle.  I am planning to do some occasional deer hunting and target practice.  Also, I will use that gun to train my 15 year old son on a higher caliber rifle.  I have always owned or used rifles which already had scopes mounted.  I am finding all of the numerous brands and types of scopes overwhelming when making a purchase choice.

I determined a Vortex Diamondback 3x9x40 would suit my needs and budget.  I saw rebate deals being run on the Sightron scopes.  I set my eyes on the Sightron SII Big Sky 3.5x10x42 with the plex reticle that I like for only $50 more than the Diamondback (after rebate).  Is that scope a better scope than the Diamondback?  Does the move from 3x9x40 to a 3.5x10x42 change the dynamics of the scope and my planned use of the rifle?  Is there a better scope in the $200 to $250 price range.  I see several of the Sightron's discussed, but the 3.5x10x42 scope is not mentioned very often.  Sightron seems like a good brand and great customer service as does Vortex.

I am new to this board and am very impressed with the breath of knowledge and input by other members.  I greatly appreciate any input.

That Sightron is a what I would call 2 steps above the Diamonback. It will be a longer time before you are wishing you had purchased a better scope.

Thanks for your help.  I am buying the Sightron!

While I am at it, I realize good quality scope mounts and rings are very important.  The Ruger American rifle comes with two piece mounting plates (Weaver style). Is a one piece mounting base better than a two piece factory base like the American has?  I am planning to purchase Warne Maxma Permanent 1" rings.  Should I get low, medium, or high?

Again, thanks for your input!
