Asking for inputs.  I have searched this forum and decided on 3 models.  Unfortunately I do not have the oppurtunity to touch/compare all 3.  SO, please provide any comments on any one of the 3.  I will use the spotter strictly for hunting (carried in a backpack)  with a small small "maybe" using for digiscoping.
I know that I can change eye pieces on the Pentax and the Nikon so that would be a plus.  The Leupold is smaller and that would be a plus.  They are all in the same price range and have good warranties.  All the reviews I have read  give them a real good rating.  Since this is a good deal of money for me I want to be sure I choose the right one.

Pentax ED 65mm 20-60X

Leupold Gold Ring 12-40 60mm HD

Nikon Fieldscope III 60mm ED 20-45x

Thanks for your time

Gary

I'd kick out the Leupold and lean heavy on Nikon.   I have a non ED nikon spoting scope and like it.  I use Nikon cameras with ED lenses.  I can vouch for how sharp they are, and color netural.   When you can find a stain less than a dime in size on a guys pants on a dark stage when editing a full lenght shot...

Some of Pentax can be warm in color.  Thier larger pro cameras are ok.  There is a big shake out in the camera world and Pentax is pushing into other areas.  They would be my second choice.

I have experience with the Nikon and Pentax. the 20-60x zoom on the Pentax did not impress me at all. However the fixed eyepieces are excellent. I owned the edIII for a couple of years. the zoom eyepiece you mention is better than the Pentax zoom but not by much. There is another zoom for the Nikon called the MCII 7467. I recommend passing on the other zoom. The newer one is much better optically.

I sold my edIII because it still weighs a lot when you add a tripod to the setup. I now am a very happy owner of the nikon ed50 with the MCII eyepiece. 7467. It has a power range of 13-40x on the little ed50.

Thanks for the information.  In researching here, it seems you can make the scope better by getting a better eye piece.  I weighed that into the equation and best I can tell is if I get a good body later on I can upgrade the eye piece.  Just can't afford it any time soon.

Thanks again
Gary

Me too. I was less than impressed by the Leupold. The Nikon Fieldscopes are awesome.
I used their 50 mm ED scope one miserably dark and rainy morning and i was surprised by how well i could see tiny details on very distant ducks i such a low light.

Yea, that little ed50 is stunning! It is very packable as well. I use mine with a Bogen mono pod when backpacking and a compact tripod when traveling short distances.

If possible avoid buying the scope packaged with the older 13-30x zoom EP. You would be better off buying the body of the scope then buying the newer 13-40x zoom EP. I am not saying the older zoom offers a poor view. It is still excellent. But when you can have a newer and more powerful better zoom EP. For the same price it's  a no brainer.Big%20Grin

I have the Pentax 65mm scope, very happy with it. I bought a 16-49xastronomy eye piece. I thought 60x was too dim for a 65mm scope.

Thanks all for the inputs.  I got a really good deal on the Pentax 65ED.

Tero,

Thanks for the info on the eye piece.  I will definitely check it out.
