Well,I didn't get the Model 70 Winchester I've asked so many questions about.I was telling a friend of mine I was about to buy one and he let me know he was about to sell this rifle. It's a 1969 model L579 Sako Forester Deluxe in 243.A friend of his bought it new when he was stationed in Germany. He says the gun is likely unfired and it looks it.There are only a couple small handling marks and the bore looks perfect. From the serial number it was made in 1969 and there are no import marks.
What scope would you guys suggest for this fine rifle? The only problem is the large rear sight which is soldered on.I'm just going to mount a low power as low as possible though.I'll try to find something that will fit behind the rear sight.

A lady of that beauty deserves a finer dress... IF IT WERE ME.... I would use the open sights while I was saving up for a Zeiss Diavari or Swarovski or Kahles. 2.5-10x42 (or 50). But that's just me... There is a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 on the sample list for just a bit over your price. It is a fine scope and will serve you well.

Leupold makes a VX3 1.75-6x32 that is only 11.2 in. long. The 2.5-8x36 is only 11.4 in. These might be a good choice considering your rear sight. The glass is fine on the leos and they look great on any gun.
The Conquest is a very good scope also. It is 13.15 in.
Nice gun BTW. Edited by tahqua - September/08/2011 at 15:48 |

Thanks guys.I may save a bit more.I've spent my "EXTRA" money for a while on the rifle purchase. What I want though is something I can mount low that is light and small enough that it won't overpower this slim trim lady. I'll have to look into that 1.75-6 VX3. Shots will be inside 100 yards 99% of the time and 200 would be the max so a lot of magnification isn't needed.

That would really look good on that rifle... I'd still go with a Diavari. Remove the iron sight, have the barrel repaired... worth it...

Sweet rifle you got there! I'll say it again. If they are still available a Vortex Viper 2-7x32 would be a good choice. Or a gloss finish Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36 would look great. However, I tend to agree with Kickboxer about this particular gem deserving some really good optics Kahles, Swaro or Zeiss if you could get your hands on one of those 3-9x36 models that would be super sweet.

I would use the Leupold Ultralight 2.5x20 scope with some QD rings from Warne or Talley. I have this on a .22 LR and it is a magnificient scope for quick shots at 250 yards or more.
I WOULD NOT REMOVE THE REAR SIGHT. tHAT RIFLE IS NICE AS GREAT AS IT IS. Very few rifles these days come with a decent useable set of sights.
Besides, a 50 mm scope on that rifle would look ungainly. Edited by anweis - September/09/2011 at 10:16 |

I did a little experimenting. I was able to mount the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 from my Sako 75 to the L579 with the Leupold Medium ringmounts. The objective was right against the rear sight base with the sight blade removed, but it worked for eye placement. The bolt handle just barely cleared. It looks like I will have to use medium mounts anyway just to clear the bolt. Unless I find a scope with a much smaller eye piece I may as well use a 40mm objective scope.
What would be great would be to find a place that listed the full specs of different scopes including the actual diameter of the objective bell and the eye piece.I live in a small town and have to drive 2 hours one way just to find a modest selection of scopes.Even then most times there is only one option for mounts. Then add something into the mix like owning a Sako rifle with tapered dovetail mounting and you have a recipe for frustration.

The Sako tapered dovetails can be a bit challenging. I've pretty much be using the Talleys' although my original 75 still has the Optilocks. Good luck with your new toy.

I have the same Sako in a 300H&H. My dad bought it around 1968.
I had to have it rebarreld. I have a Leupold 3,5-10 x 40 mounted, using Leupold QR mounts.
Nice rifle and she should shoot like a dream.
