I've just been thinking of the next gun I wish to get and having a look through the various gun makers websites, there really isn't anything that catches my eye.
So i've decided to instead of buying in one hit, i've decided to purchase a basic model and upgrade. Here's what I want the finished gun to be like:
Uses: Rested on various surfaces. Shooting distances from 50m to 350m.
Calibre: .223 Remington
Barrel: 24 or 26 inch blued Varmint barrel
Stock: Either a Hogue or Bell & Carlson aluminium bedded varmint stock in black
Action: Perferably left handed but that severely limits my options. I can put up with it in right handed.
Trigger: I was fiddling with the display Savage Accutrigger on the counter at this gun shop and I had it on the the lowest setting and I found that a bit too light.
Scope: Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 (Don't know which model)
Extras: Bipod
I've narrowed it down to 3 guns.
Remington 700 SPS Varmint Left Hand but Hogue or B&C don't make replacement stocks to fit this model. A bit pricey too at about AU$1350. Maybe a new trigger.
Savage 12FLV the stock is tupperware but it has a decent trigger. About AU$1000
Howa 1500 Varmint. I like what I see here: About AU$1000. You can get them with Hogue stocks here but they're pillar bedded. May need to replace trigger with a Timney.
Questions i've got is:
1. Would I be able fit the laminated stock of the Savage 12 VLP DBM Left Hand to the 12FLV???
2. Which Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 model is "the one to get"??? (Side focus???)
3. Which Harris Bipod is the best for what i'm using it for??? (I've heard a lot of people like the swivel or the leg notch)
Anyone on here used or own those 3 models???

ApostleAK;  go to   and lurk around or ask some questions.
There are many many savage tinkerers and quite a few builders of savage and or stevens rifles there who will gladly answer and help with your build. For a $12(US)fee you can become a paid member and access to all the archieved formums and the how to articles become accessable, also the vendors and gunsmiths who specailize in Savage products.
I can try to answer question #1 your 12vlp is a detachable mag and the 12fvl is not, so unless you convert the 12fvl it is not going to fit. Also depends on the trigger  accu or not(different screw spacing) and if the 12fvl is a new model the mag release is different. It probably can be done but would be cost prohibitive, especailly living down under.

If you go with the new model 10FLCP-k Savage, it has the new Accu-stock. Which is supposed much stiffer in the forearm, and it has a full aluminium bedding block. This rifle can either be chambered for .308 or .223.
