Although I had offers from Brandon and Ted to redo my Mauser stock for me (THANKS again guys) I decided to try it myself (Columbus took a chance!).

I shortened and reformed the fore end by almost 3".

Opened up the ejection port (doesn't look level in the pic but it is) and thumb slot.

Filled in an unused swivel stud hole.

Put a spar urethane finish on.

I'm waiting for a shotgun barrel band for the front swivel.  If it works for me I'll put a Talley band on.  If not I'll put a stud in the fore end.

I also painted the bottom metal which was chrome.

It was tedious work but fun.

I had thought hard about going with a laminate stock but that would have pushed the weight to 9lbs+.  It goes 8 3/4lbs with sling and 4 rds now.

Stayed away?  Went through what I had!   Whacko LOL

It was fun.  Started out that I noticed where rain spots were soaking in during hunting season and I just didn't like the looks of the long front end with the short bbl.  Then I was looking at some old RIFLE mags a saw things on the customs I liked.  One thing lead to another and.........

THANKS,Ted.  I've got a recoil pad fit issue that Bd set me right on.  I'd also cut the full strength spar urethane to maybe 75% s.u./25% thinner.  I'm learning.

Fantastic!!   I want to fix up my thumb slot on my Mauser sporter stock because it is off-center geometrically.  I would also like to refinish it with a bunch of coats of Pro Custom Oil.  I just didn't have enough nerve to start rasping on it!!  Shocked

It only hurts for a liittle while,Ed.  Bucky   Actually, walnut is a very tough and hard wood. It works slow and easy.  I started with 220 grit then switched to 400 to finish shaping and used 0000 steel wool to smooth things up.  Used a round pencil and a small sanding block with the sandpaper.  I also had to lower the part of the stock just in front of the thumb slot some and blend it into the receiver ring.  The thing that concerned me most was the small piece to be left just in front of the bolt release. NO problem.  I just took it easy and made sure I was keeping with the contours of the receiver.  You can do it.
