I just purchased a sightron sii 4x compact.  It seems a very nice scope and I expect to be pleased.  But I'm encountering problems mounting it and was looking for advice.

I tried to use Talley LW one piece mounts, but even with one extension piece, I lack about a 1/4" of mounting room on the scope tube.

With a second extension ring, it looks like the scope would fit exactly--no space to spare--but I've heard (without further explanation) that it is bad practice to put rings up against the "slant" at either end of the scope tube, i.e., one should leave a 1/4" of flat tube beyond the edge of the ring.

Can anyone offer any advice (especially advice tender on the wallet, I unfortunately can't upgrade to an FX right now, and that long eye relief is important to me).

I hate to say it but the compact model probably isnt a long enough tube and you should have just gone with a 3-9x40 sightron which is available with a mil dot reticle which can be used for known hold over points.  The 4x compact would be a nice choice for a 22. probably not what you want to hear but just my thought on it. Sometime you have to check out several makes of mounts to find a set up that will work. look at the Warne mounts - this might work for you.

Urimaginaryfrnd, I appreciate your response.  When I purchased the scope I didn't realize it was a "compact" (the SWFA page for this item doesn't use the word "Compact" or "rimfire," though it does provide an oal).  I thought I was buying the Sightron equivalent of the old Leupold M8.  Afterwards, having had a Burris short mag on this action--without any mounting difficulties--I naively assumed it would be OK.

I am wanting a no fuss, no muss, long eye relief 4x and would prefer not to use a variable.

The Warne base looks like a possible solution--I'll have to call and make sure this is LH compatible.

Would you happen to know if the warnings about mounting rings at the extremities of the flat tube surface on a scope are justified?  And if so, could you explain briefly the reasoning?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Sincerely,
Ella

One-piece base is probably the best way to go.

As for that Sightron.  It is a great little scope.

Koshkin, earlier I did a search of this sight and saw you were favorably disposed towards this scope.  I find the view startlingly clear and bright.  Perhaps you can comment on keeping rings away from the edges of the flat mounting space on scope tubes?  I ask because, if it CAN be done and done without risk, two extended Talleys will look better than the one piece base: nothing would overhang the ejection cutout....  Sincerely, Ella
