hey, i'm starting to play with some guns and i came upon a 1970 ruger 10-22 i think thats the year anyway. its brand new in the box. maybe had a full 10 clips through it. well. i don't think the design has changed much since then but now i'm starting to play. i got the gun and quick made a trip to my buds house and tore off some 50 cent homemade rings that were laying around. and ripped off a 4*32 tasco from his safe. lol he won't miss it i don't think.k i did a quick crappy job of mounting the scope toghether. to the old beast. lol i'm having fun shooting at all sorts of things i'm finding laying around his house. ( lol too cheap to buy formal targets, Dutch) well. all i can say is i'm fairly suprised at what i've found. with this quick crappy setup i can shoot about a 5 inch group at 65 yards, ( me shooting while sitting on my atv, as fast as i could having fun) well i'm starting to wonder if i started messing with a scope what more fun could i have. i wanna have a scope witout a lot of magnification, that looks and fits good on my new toy. what are we thinking. 125 or less. maybe even the crappyness of BSA. whats up ? opinions

You've been bit by the 10/22 bug I can see and the prognoses is not good for your pocket book.   They make more gadgets and hot rod parts for those guns than you can shake a stick at.

Also condider upgrading the mounts to Leupold STD rings and bases when you upgrade the scope.  I would leave the crappyness of the BSA behind and opt for a Simmons Pro-Air 4-12x40 if I were you.

yeah. its an evil little bug. i still don't know why i find killing cans at 65 yards more fun than paperpunching with my 223. i dunno about a new scope. As you probably know i'm considering somthing along the lines of a swift. fairly cheap, fair quality. i would seriously like to know more about swift. please awsner my post in centerfire long guns.

BTW: this may be off subject but how much would i have to pay to get a diff barrel. i don't need a super good one, just one to toy around with. play and tinker. also would i have to buy different wood or syn to fit a diff barrel?

22's can bring out the real fun in plinking. Try old shotgun hulls at 50 yds. and clay pigeons at 100 yds. One really fun thing is charcoal briquets, except have someone throw them. It is easiest to hit if you can time the briquet just as it stops in mid air. Sections of old water pipe about an 1'' in dia. placed on a flat board at 75 to 100 yards replicate silhoutte courses. Use different heights. Remember of course that each 22 is very particular about which brand is more accurate, so buy a box of each brand after you get your new scope. This is a fun and interesting project by itself. A Butler creek barrel runs about $100 and a Clark or Volquartsen about $250. Check out the Hoque 1 piece stocks, a nice addition. The cheek designs and length of pull on 10/22 are too short and too low for me, may be you too, check out other stocks that raise your head up making the gun less tiring. Brownells has light weight target parts if you really want to get into this.

i'm still contemplating whether i should mess with the barrel. i dunno if the cash would be worth it for me. i'm starting to think that maybe i should just buy some synthetic for it, ( just for somthing else to look at) then maybe a scope. i dunno about a barrel. i got bigger guns to toy with and spend money on, although this is still one of the most fun projects i've ever gotten into. What about a swift scope? lo li know i've asked this a million times, but i still haven't gotton much info. maybe i'll try it?

I've shot a .25-06 that had a Swift on it though I dont remember the model. I do think it was a 3-9x50 though and it seemed decent enough for Swifts typical price range.  Shot really well but low light performance was questionable though for plinkin with a 10-22 I would think it would be fine. those 10-22's are a blast! I still have mine, got it as my first gun! Happy plinkin!
