Being a complete newbie to the use of scopes, I have some questions about scope rings and scope bases so please bear with me.

For example, from what I have read the Burris Zee 1” rings appear to be of good quality and they come in low, medium, and high. I presume the size of the objective lens of the scope is one of the factors in deciding the height of the rings. Another factor is having the scope clear the rifle’s rear iron sights. It also seems the various ring heights will dictate cheek weld.

Therefore, on a Ruger 10/22 with factory barrel and iron sights and a scope having a 1” barrel and a 40mm objective lens, will a set of medium rings work better than a set of low rings for clearance? What about a scope that has a 1” barrel and a 32mm objective lens? Will a low mount clear the iron sights? It seems as though high rings will provide plenty of clearance on any barrel and also give more of a heads-up cheek weld. This would seem to make their use an individual choice as whether the shooter wants a cheek weld down low and close or one that keeps the head in a more upright position.

As to scope bases, in reading ring descriptions, they basically say rings are for 1” or 30mm tubes. The description says nothing about the width of the base on which the rings will be mounted. The base that came with the rifle is a combination Weaver/Picatinney base. Does the lack of width description for rings mean the bases are standard in width and that one does not have to be concerned with whether the rings will fit the base regardless of whether the rings are Weaver or Picatinney?

I did read this post, http://www.opticstalk.com/how-to-determine-proper-ring-height_topic5946.html, but it appears to presume that one has access to a caliper to take the various measurements and I don’t have one and have never used one. There is also a post on a “ring alignment tool.” I didn’t even know such a device existed. So you can see my level of “expertise.”

All guidance will be appreciated.
