I had started a thread earlier about what scope to get and something must have gone wrong because it got locked out and only the first page is visible so I have to start another thread.

I am really liking the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP scope, and I have time to wait for them to come out.  My question is, does it have enough range of adjustment for 1000yd shots or would I need to add a 20 moa rail?

What caliber, bullet, and muzzle velocity? Kinda hard to say without knowing that. If it's a .338-378 Wby, maybe, if it's a .22 lr, probably not.

Looks like if I sight in at 200 yds using a 180 gr sierra gameking with a muzzle velocity of 2950 fps, there will be about 286 inches of drop at 1000 yds.

75MOA adjustment say you get exactly half up and half down you have about 37.5 MOA  in each direction

Now Round your ballistic calculator to about 30MOA  (286 in @ 1000yds is 28.6MOA roughly) and I think you'd be cutting it close, but doable, with no base

but you'd be fine with a 20MOA base in case your dont get a zero exactly in the middle of the scopes adjustment range.

Be advised that Murphy and his laws apply to scopes too, and definitely to elevation adjustments.  if this is genuinely a gun that might see a 1,000 yard line, I'd put the 20MOA rail on for sure - no reason not to.

This.

And furthermore, if you ever switch scopes that might have less "up", you've got an additional 20 MOA at the ready.
Scopes may come and go, but the rail will stay with the rifle.   Wink
