First time poster, long time reader, great topic, love the forum.

Ok, I am looking into purchasing a scope for my Savage Model 16 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. I have an old Weaver Classic V 3-9x38. I mainly hunt whitetail deer here in Wisconsin, but would like to get into predator hunting for population control and fun. I also want to start shooting for recreational fun (out to 600 yards). I am looking hard at both the Nikon Monarch 3 4-16x42 and the Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44. What are the pros and cons of each. I have not found much on what makes the new Monarch 3 different from the old Monarchs. I also have heard that Nikon Monarchs are not the best at tracking.

The Vortex will have more adjustment range, because of the 30 mm maintube.

Welcome to Optics Talk.

Do have a definite budget in mind? Are you interested in considering other scopes as well?

I would like to keep it under $600 dollars, and I am open to other brands. I like both scope's style of turret. I do not like Bushnell's turret style, except on their tactical scopes. I just really want a scope that I can make finger tip adjustments, holds zero, and tracks well.

I should also note that I have a stainless steel Murphy Precision 10 MOA Picatinny base.

For what its worth, I decided to go with a Nikon Monarch 3 3-12x42 as the scope I will purchase. I will go with Seekins' 1 inch low rings (0.76").
