    Posted: January/05/2014 at 11:11
I sold my X-Bolt right after deer season and got a hold of a new-to-me Model 70 Classic BOSS 280 Rem.  After throwing an SS 3-15x42 on it and working up a few loads with both R22 & IMR-4831, I finally got it out to the range right before Christmas.

I was little skeptical with the BOSS & shorter barrel as far as what I could get for velocities, but after running it through the chronograph, I found a load with the R22 giving me right around 2900 fps (had to sneak over book max to get there-no pressure signs), plus it printed a nice 0.90'' group @ 200 yds with the BOSS set on the recommended setting (4).  All in all, I'm more than happy.

I wanted to go retest this load this morning, but it's 2* with 30 mph North winds (-15*) so I think it'll have to wait.

Be aware that the BOSS "recommended setting" is merely a starting point for "tuning" the BOSS for maximum performance.  Tuning the BOSS can be a time consuming, but very worthwhile, endeavor.  From the "recommended setting", adjust "out" or "in"  in very small increments (I use 1/8 turn to start and then smaller once I get near the spot) to find the "sweetspot"… the spot where the harmonic exactly cancels.

I remember you telling me that.

I didn't have enough reloads to play with it too much, but I did adjust it in & out about a 1/4 turn on 2 different sets, and holy cow did that make difference.  The grouping went from the picture to 3'' to over 6'' (all at 200 yds).  Plus with the muzzle brake, it kicked like my 11 lb 243.

The "recommended setting" is rarely optimum, in my experience.  I've, a couple of times, found a particular ammo that did not require adjustment… specifically, Winchester Fail-Safe 180gr 30-06 and 140gr Fail-Safe 7mmRemMag.  I've had, overall, pretty good luck with Fail-Safe.

Have you used the CR BOSS and did you find any difference as far as it requiring a different setting for the same load, between it and the muzzle brake (besides recoil)?

I have BOSS CR for both the 30-06 and 7mmRemMag and "YES", you will have to readjust for maximum performance.  However, I've not found the re-adjustments to to be significant.  Small adjustments using the BOSS brake as a starting point have been sufficient.
