being new to the site and with time on my hands i was looking thru posts and came across a repeating statement that places the mirage iin the distance and not due to the heat rising off the barrel in front of the scope(which can be eliminated with tubing).    of couse mirages in the desert are a fact.  anyhow what am i missing?

Mirage occurs with large heat differentials. There are both types. Tubing (now available from Brownells.com) helps with barrel heating types as does heavy barrels. Sunshades work very well as support for tubing and help a little. Any sunshade or tubing should go at least or past the forend stock. Mirage in front of the gun is temperature, distance, and angle of the shot. The first two,  one has no control over, but the last can be manipulated somewhat. Barrel mirage usually is worse in the early morning on a cold day (barrel cold) and several fast shots heat the barrel very rapidly and obviously doesn't depend on the distance. Shorter tubes work well here up to the point were the thermals coming off the ground distort the image. Usually these are pockets of air with different temperature at various distances rather than a curtain (like in the movies)
