Shooting .308, up to 1000 yards - mostly at paper, but may entertain varmint shooting in the future.

So, I hear that anything past about 16x on a bright/hot day (most of my shooting will eventually be in Florida, so this is an issue) will have mirage problems.

So, what is the MAX magnification I should have for this type of shooting.  And if this is a concern, then why do people get 24x and 32x scopes?

10x is what a lot of 1000 yard shooters use and prefer.  I prefer fixed scopes for tactical but for hunting deer or varmint a good variable is better.  On a cool day with cloud coverage 24x or 32x won't pick up the mirage you would if it was a hot day with no cloud coverage.  With a variable you can start high and adjust down until the mirage is gone.  I myself probably couldn't stand looking through a scope with 20x magnification or higher.

Mirage is an issue for most all high powered scopes, to be sure.

BUT....

It all depends on the quality of the scope too as to HOW much you are affected.

My old USO SN-3 had a 3-17 power, but even at 17x the quality glass/coatings inside allowed me to see through the mirage and hit my target. I'm not sure that makes sense, but it's true. When you look through a guys Tasco or BSA sitting next to you at the range at the same power setting(example), you will think your looking through a swimming pool.

I'm sure a NF, S&B, Swaro, etc. would allow the same to some degree.

What scopes have you been looking at? Looks like the perfect setup for the new X.O.T.I.C. Plenty of scope to suit every need you can throw at it. People get the higher power scopes for many different reasons. They may think they need all that power to see out to a 1000 yards, when 10 is really all you need. Some people use their scope for a spotting scope as well to zoom in and see where they hit. Some long range varmint hunters prefer the higher powers to really zoom on on their target. For you 16X is really all you will ever need.

Can you tell me more about the XOTIC - like who makes it, their reputation, and most of all optical clarity?  That is my biggest concern - I am spoiled on ZEISS Conquest scopes - love the clarity and optics - and desire at LEAST that kind of clarity/brightness.

Some more info on them here.

http://www.xoticoptics.com/

They are new to the industry and the XOTIC is the only scope they are currently offering. They have yet to establish a reputation. Everything they have to offer optically will exceed the quality of a Conquest optically. This is one aspect this scope is definitely not lacking.
