Most of my rifles have Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 scopes on on them. I like those scopes a lot and use them as a benchmark/comparison for other scopes.

I've read a lot of great reviews on the glass quality of the Minox ZV3 3-9x40 and was wondering if anyone has both scopes or has looked through both and could give me a comparison between the Minox and the Bushnell.

Thanks,
Mike

I have a few ZV3 3-9x40s,  one on my bone collector smoke pole, one on a 22 mag, and one on a 223.  They have worked exceptionally well when I use them.  I've used 4200's in the past, They have a better coating (rainguard) on them that would be beneficial for a hunting rig if less than perfect weather is going to be an option.

SVT,

How is the Minox in low light situations?  Any issues with the eyebox (i.e., ease of getting a quick sight picture) on the Minox?

The scope is going to be a gift for my brother and to be perfectly honest, I don't see him sitting out in the rain too much.  So while I like the rainguard, it may be an non-issue in this case.

Also, aside from sighting in, he'll probably never use the adjustments either.

Basically, just looking for a nice, general use deer rifle scope for a 30-06 and I am wondering if I should give him one of my 4200s or pickup a new Minox.

I've never had issues it on my smoke pole which would be the most similar style to the 30-06 your looking at. The eye box is not bad but not great either, it is serviceable and I've never felt I needed it any different for the guns its on.  I've shot deer after sunset within the 30 minute legal hunting hours with no issues.  I set the scope last summer and shot it about 30-40 times since with no issues in the scope holding zero. I set the adjustment and forgot it.

Tip69,

I think you may be thinking of the Browning scopes that were offered a few years ago.  They were the same as the Elites but without the rainguard.

I've got a ZV3 that I've had for awhile but only used a little. It had a defect in the erector system that was taken care of and handled pretty well by Minox. Optically, it is suprisingly good, especially for its price ($159 on samplelist couple years ago). I compared it to some of my other hunting glass of all sorts and the image competed well and is plenty good enough for most hunting scenarios.

The only place I feel somewhat underwhelmed with the ZV is in the robustness department. I haven't been in a hurry to mount it on my 8lb. 300 win. mag yet. It has a fairly thin-walled main tube and I'm reminded of its Chinese origin when holding it. But, it is nice and light weight; the 'ole trade off.

Overall, I'd probably be more inclined to trust an Elite 4200 for hard use, but I'd guess that the optical quality of the ZV would hold up well against it, though I haven't looked through them side by side.
