All-

I'm in the market for a new riflescope and have decided on either the ZA3 or the Conquest in 3x9x40 with the 4a reticle.  It's going on a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight chambered in 7mm-08.  I live in MS and hunt in different locations from one day to the next; i.e., pine thickets, hardwood bottoms, and open fields.  Low light performance is very important and I believe either will satisfy my needs.

I've read Koshkin's review of the Meopta, Minox, and Zeiss and I narrowed it down to the above two.  I had decided that I was going with the Conquest because of it's superb reputation and the fact that my brother and I bought our dad one for Christmas last year and he loves it.  However, the more I read about the Minox the more I change my mind.  To make matters worse, I know that Minox is offering a $50 mail in rebate right now, but I can also get the Conquest with the 4a from a dealer friend for 30% off.

Is the Conquest deal a no-brainer or am I missing something?  What say ye?

78 (which is 6.5 Dozen Ft. Benning Black Hat or Sgt Airborne)

is Ft Benning Black Hat or SGT Airborne a person on here? I've looked through the Conquest quite a bit, and I would say MY next scope will be a Zeiss. But get whatever fits your needs, I'm sure the Minox is a good quality scope (never looked through one myself)

Sorry it was a saying from a salty old Sgt at Fort Benning.

6 or 1/2 dozen.

He used to say.

78 and the it means some other things. but really the joke was 6 and a 1/2 dozen is 78.

Welcome to OT evansjos. In all actuality, either scope will work just fine. IMO, I'd say stick with the Conquest. Big Grin

I took the plunge and bought a ZA3 off the Sample list today. After reading the reviews I just could not pass up this deal. I will let you know what I think on Friday. Friends going to bring over his conquest and 4200 , I have a VXIII and a Monarch. Just see how it stacks up.

Thanks for all the replies.  Bayoubuck, looking forward to reading your comparison.  I currently have a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x36 on my rifle and the size is perfect but I know the glass is well behind these two scopes.  My head says it's a no-brainer to buy the Zeiss if I have the opportunity but the Minox is very appealing as well.

On a side note, anyone know of the approximate value of my current scope?  I would describe it as in Demo-B condition on the Sample List.

I have had them both and I think it's a coin flip.
You won't go wrong with either one.
However, since it is going on a somewhat trim rifle, I would give the slightest nod to the Minox.

I have both in 3-9x40. My Conquest has a more appealing plex reticle and better edge clarity than my ZA3. ZA3 is smaller and is a better physical match for my M70 Featherweight, which is where I mounted it. If I had to pick in this price range I'd go with Conquest or SII Big Sky, which is an excellent scope and currently has a $75 rebate.

I just bought a Browning X-Bolt 7mm-08 and I put a Leupold 3x6x50mm VX-R with a heavy reticle. The center point of the reticle lights up in the dark.  I also hunt small fields, creek bottoms and cut overs. I've been very impressed with the scope and rifle thus far as just sighting it in at the range.  Can't wait for hunting season.  You might also was to look at the Z3 Swarovski they are on sale now and their glass can't be beat.  I know its a little more money but you want have to replace their scope for a long time.  I also bought a nice Z3 50mm for my varmit rifle a VSSF Remington 700 fluted barrel stainless.  I can see varmits a dusk and dawn with ease.  Let me know hos the new Winchester works out.  I'm interested in a Winchester Model 70 myself and will most likely be my next rifle looking at 25-06, 270, 208 or 30-96 myself.

Birdhunter-

The Z3 is definitely very nice.  Looked through one the other night and was drooling over it.  The image is just so crisp and vivid that it really makes you want to jump on it.  Problem is, it's just a little over my budget.

On the Featherweight, I've actually had it for about 10 years and absolutely LOVE it.  It's light, very accurate, and is a beautiful rifle.  The action is smooth and dependable and I haven't found any round that it doesn't digest well.  I plan on passing it down to my son one day.  The 7mm-08 is a perfect round in my opinion for deer and it fits my type of hunting well.

The glass in both the Minox and the Conquest comes from the same place,(Schott).I dont know about Meopta,(probably Schott).Your differences are going to be in the coatings and the mechanics.I have a Conquest and just a few days ago purchased a Meopta . We all know the mechanics of the Conquest are great and I find know fault with the Meopta as well .What I do find very interesting is the low light performance advantage of the Meopta.I bought a Meostar 3-12x56 and compared it to a Conquest 3-12x56, both have 30mm tubes and to my eyes, saw a real noticable difference in low light performance from the Meopta.Even in daytime the Meopta seemed better. That being said,if this same perfomance is to be had in the Meopta's 3-9x42,(it should, as the glass and coatings are the same),the Meopta Meopro should be the brighter scope. As far as Minox,I haven't owned one but from what I have read they are a little outperformed by the Conquest and Meopta.

I had ZA5 2-10x40. Excellent glass for the price. Contrast is better than two bushnell I own. Color is more vivid than Conquest. Conquest has cooler color temp than both bushnell and Minox. I scan out side at night with minox, things in shadow are more pop out than conquest. Cross hair is easier to pick up at night against dark object. Down side is the CENTER of cross hair is thicker than conquest which make it harder to shoot small dot at range over 200 yard. But for hunting should be fine. Conquest has very large image cricle which make is easy to come the the eye, that makes cheek weld less critical than Minox. I feel Minox is very restrictive. That is season I sold mine. I maybe spoiled by two 30mm tubed bushnell I have.

Sorry to double post. I should add: Things looks closer with Conquest and  Bushnell at 9 power than Minox at 10. I had a 8x40 leupold binoculars at range with me one time. Target looks closer than Minox.

Thanks to all who replied to my post.  I just found and ordered a Minox 2-10x40 ZA5 with the #4 reticle off the Sample List.  I think it's going to be perfect for my hunting needs.

I'll bet that scope will serve you well.
Don't forget a follow up on how you like it.

OK, did my comparison with the Minox, and man this is a nice scope. The Ziess and the Minox to me looked very close glass wise. Could not give the edge one way or another. The two advantages I saw with the Conquest are smaller turrets and bolder reticle. Neither that big of a deal and with the price difference, I am glad I went with the Minox. It has a new home on a Remington 308 I'm working on, cant wait to get it to the range this weekend.

Awesome.  Just got my ZA5 2-10x40 in today and it looks great.  Planning to mount it up tomorrow and do some leg work with it.

However, I just thought about something important.  Does anyone know if the Minox warranty is available for items purchased off the Sample List?  I had just assumed the warranty would be good.

I just got my ZA5 4-20X50 off the sample list and it came with the instructions for signing up for the warranty.   I did and had no problem doing it on line.   The receipt actually says SWFA, not Samplelist.   I really don't think there is any difference.   I compared the scope with my other scopes and I have to say the glass is outstanding.   A little better than my Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14X50 and not quite as good as my Swarovski Z5 3.5-18X44.    I won't try  to compare it to my Zeiss Victory because it would just not be a fair comparison.   The one thing I can see now that will take concentration is that the eyebox seems to be small.   However, when you have the right cheek weld it is a great view.   I am going to take it out this weekend to see how it performs when I am shooting targets.
