Tonight I ordered a Minox binocular - BD 7X42 BR (from SWFA) and have had second thoughts.

One is that I should’ve sprung for an HG model.

Two is that I should’ve gave the Pentax DCF SP’s a stronger look.

They will be used in Groundhog fields.

I have a terrible time with the 10X shakes, so the 7X sounded great for me.

So, what do you think? Are the HG’s that much sharper / clearer?

Is the Pentax as good/better?

Thanks for any comments!

Mike -

I own the 8.5X HGs.  They are certainly an upgrade from the BDs, but I think you will be pleasantly surprised at what you receive.

Would love to hear what you have to say after using them.

Mike,

I agree with you, the Minox HG has alittle more to offer.

MinoBright non-glare silver coating on the prisms should be brighter in low light situations.

The body is magnesium instead of aluminum. The 8.5x43 being slightly lighter in weight than the 7x42

The 8.5x43 would also bring the "little critters" closer to you.

The Pentax 8x43 DCF SP is a great binocular but has a narrower FOV.

Don't panic. You can try the 7x and if you need more magnification you can always return it for the HG 8.5x43.

The HG also offers the Quick Close Focus.

Let us know how things turn out for you.

Thanks for the info / comments!

Some thoughts  ... (HG 8.5 X 43 vs. BD 7 X 42)

HG is 4.8 oz less weight

HG exit pupil is 5.1 - BD is 6

HG FOV is +74 feet @1000 over the BD

HG's 8.5 power is not a plus for me, 7X would be much steadier.

HG is + $309.00

My general thought is that if I like the apparent "hyping" of the contrast*  in the 7 X 42 - I will be satisfied. If it appears phony and unnatural, I may return it for the HG 8.5 X 43

Again, thanks.

Mike

Hi guys, new here,

Regarding FOV  Unless minox specs are wrong the hg's have one of the narrowest FOV's (320) of almost any bino in 8x class...But they are SHARP!

Yeah, they're narrower than most - I've read it's by design ... for edge sharpness.

Got them a couple days ago. The 7X is perfect for me, I can hold them steady and I don't miss the 3X that isn't there (my old bin was a heavy 10X50.

Ordered a pair of Butler Creek flip ups for the objectives. The OEM's are worthless.

The telescoping eyepieces are great. I'd like to feel a solid detent, but that's nitpicking.

Overall I'm happy with them ... bright and contrasty - clear and easy to get sharp focus.
