Which Minox?

But in the magnification range you are talking about I would strongly suggest you take a look at the Nikon 50mm ED. Superb optics and probably a lot less money than any of the Minox's with the eye piece you are talking about. Do a search here on the OT to see what others have to say about their 50mm ED.

The Nikon ED50 Fieldscope is indeed a very, very nice spotter.  Coupled with its excellent optics is the fact that it is so small and light that it packs effortlessly.  This spotter is often considered at its best with the fixed 27x magnification eyepiece.

It is however, a purpose-driven spotting scope.  It is fantastic for backpacking, traveling, or any other time where size and weight are at a premium. But, it is not (IMO) a sufficient substitute for a larger, full size spotter.  It's 50mm objective just simply limits its usability in lower-light situations.  I know some people who disagree with me on this, though they are almost all birders who only use their scopes in broad daylight and in good weather. They also don't (yet) do much (if any) digiscoping.

Does the eyepiece really make that big of a difference?  The guy says its a 500$ upgrade.

Yes, the eyepiece really can make that big of a difference.

Much gets written up about scopes having ED glass in their objectives, but without a really good eyepiece, much of that ED glass' value is simply wasted.

The eyepiece is the weak (or strong) link in the whole system.
