I would like to hear comments, opinions, reviews, etc. from anyone who owns, or has tested, the Minox 10x44mm Porro prism binocular.
click here for Minox 10x44mm Porro I tested the Minox BD 8x44mm BP some time ago, and my two major annoyances were, the right diopter adjustment, which is located directly under the center focus wheel, and, kidney bean(figure eight) which appears when CLOSE focusing this binocular. Aside from those two complaints, I really was impressed with the Minox BD 8x44 BP Porro, overall. My reason for returning it was the annoying right/center diopter adjustment. I have not spent any real time behind any Minox optic. In general, I hear good things about them. The one problem that I have with the particular binocular you have inquired about that would forever keep it out of serious contention for me is the FoV. I mean, come on, are they serious? 268 ft @ 1000 yds? That's ridiculous! Even the 8x44 model only manages 337 ft. @ 1000 yds.
As a porro prism binocular the FoV should be wider, not narrower than comparable roof prism models. It doesn't make a bit of difference how good it is otherwise, such a narrow FoV is a non-starter issue for me.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

lucznik, Thanks, but you already know that I'm in the 'minority'(18 million or so) where FOV is not an issue for me. Pentax PCF WP 16x60mm and Pentax PCF WP II 20x60mm, these binoculars that I have, have "the narrowest" FOV on the market. The biggest complaint about the Pentax PCF WP II's has always been the narrow FOV. But, for some of us, the optics and optical coatings more than make up for their deficiencies in the area of limited Field Of View. Unfortunately, Minox seems to be tagging right behind Pentax in this sensitive area.(FOV) Someone just needs to convince you that shooting Prairie Dogs & Prairie Chickens is much more fun than going after Elk or Moose; then you won't be so hung up on FOV any more. 8>) Edited by Bird Watcher - December/18/2008 at 22:23 |

I LOVE shooting both prairie dogs and prairie chickens. I do it as often as I can. But, it ain't gonna replace the elk and moose (actually, I've yet to draw a moose tag). For a high-magnification, special-purpose binocular like the 16x60 and 20x60, I don't think the narrow FoV would bother me at all. My 80mm Elite has one of the narrowest FoV among comparable spotting scopes and it never causes me any grief. I also have a well-known penchant for 10x binoculars, which always have somewhat more restrictive fields than their 8x brethren. But, the current crop of "higher-end" porro prism glass all seems to have fields that are way too narrow, even for me. What I really want is another binocular like the B&L Discoverer Porro Prism. The 10x had a FoV of 341 and the 8x was over 400. Good video, BTW. |

Just keep checking www.astromart.com/classifieds (binoculars) every day, & sooner or later one will show up. 8>) |
