I am playing with the idea of mounting a Vortex red dot on my mini 14 in this manner.... a single quick detach ring (30mm) on the forward integral ruger base. I need a wide ring that will fit the mini reciever base, other than that this seems like a simple way to set up a scout type mini. Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions on this.

If you cant afford the aimpoint the 1-4 Bushnell will give you a illuminated dot and be better than no illumination but I have used both and the aimpoint is really the way to go if you can afford it.

Thanks for the input, both are good choices. However I want to stick with the original concept I described (a single ring optical unit) and not bridge the entire reciever ejection port while minimizing the size of the dot optic package. I think it would be a cool idea if I can get it together, just not sure what ring to use?

                       Thanks again

I think one of the factory ruger rings would do the job.  They are heavy duty and a vortex red dot is not a heavy sight by no means.

two points of attachment is stronger than one point of attachment when treated roughly.

Don't think the Larue will work because his mini has one of those funky built in ruger bases.  He needs a ring that will work with the integrated base.  I know of none that is wider than the factory rings that would work.

Thank you for the additional input, and I can appreciate the two ring concept as being stronger than one. I have been shooting firearms for close to forty years and its not like I dont know what I'm talking about either. This is smomething I want to do with MY GUN for MY PLEASURE. Yes my mini ranch has the funky integrel mounts and it also has a custom two stage trigger that is a pleasure to feel and a shilen barrel of heavier contour than factory that has been hand lapped. It will shoot 3/4 inch groups @ 100 yds, and is custom stocked. I guess all I really wanted was some help with finding a suitable ring and it appears you have answered my question the best you can. Dont know if Ruger makes quick detach rings though!

Put whatever you like on it I showed you the adapter that will allow you to choose any rings --- ARMS, Leupold, laRue, whatever.

Thanks again, I'm familiar with the burris option just dont like the stacking method. I'll look around in brownells, might have to go with a warne or talley. I want to keep it low as possible with the chance of achieving a co-witness picture with the irons. The idea of moving the sight forward (scout concept) is to be able to keep both eyes open and having the advantage of  peripheal vision. The possibility of achieving a co-witness with the irons is a concept used by many law enforcement agencies as well as our military and others around the world. Wither or not I can get this to pan out with the mini remains to be seen.

It is simply not possible to make a red dot co-witness the fixed sights on the mini-14 because you cant get that low.
